Risks of using the IUD as birth control include cramps, bleeding (sometimes severe), pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and the perforation of the uterus. In order to determine possible causes of infertility, a complete history and physical examination of both partners is essential. I suggest that you schedule an appointment with your GYN and your partner's urologist (For a sperm analysis) ASAP.

I had my Mirena removed in May. My fiancé and I just found out we are pregnant. However, I'm probably about 5 weeks. I'm hoping everything goes okay. I'm so sorry for the ladies who experienced their miscarriages I'm in fear this may happen to us. I took a natural vitamin to increse my reproduction system. Which I hoped increased my uterine lining since I read that is one of the main issues for miscarriages. Can someone please tell me if there were any signs when they miscarried or anything I can try and do to prevent it? I'm taking my prenatal but maybe I should still continue my natural reproduction vitamin. Any help or conversation would be great. I would love to hear success stories too Smile this would be my second child and my fiancé's first... And he is already super excited I don't want to fear a misscarriage. Thank you all xx

Think positive and take care of yourself, sadly there is not much you can do this early in the pregnancy to stop it from happening. But it sounds like everything is going well so call your doctor an make that appointment.

Infertility after Mirena
I have given birth to three children and also had five miscarriages, so you can see I never had a problem conceiving. Two years ago I got a Mirena inserted and after six months had it removed. Since then, I am infertile. I have even went so far as to take FOUR rounds of Clomid and have still not conceived. The MIRENA absolutely made me infertile, there is no doubt in my mind. It is dangerous and horrible and the people who created it should suffer. They have robbed me of my fertility and I despise them for it.

iud - infertile
I'm so sorry about that. I also had the copper iud in 2008 and removed it on beginning of 2010 and we haven't gotten pregnant yet and it's been almost two years. I want to have a baby and so mad I was talked into the iud. My periods are no longer the same. And every dr tell me to wait it out. I hope things work out for you. I'll be praying for you. ~Ann

Hi Emilya! My name is Donetta & I to feel Mirena has left me infertile. On top of that I experienced having PID while on Mirena. No female should ever use this method of birth-control. I HATE BAYER PHARMACUETICALS!!!

mirena and infertility
have you gotten any vaccines, like tetanus or hpv in the past few years? those will make you infertile. and i think i read that many other vaccines are loaded with polysorbate-80, which also affects fertility. tetanus laced with anti-hcg has been linked to miscarriages and infertility in countries where unknowing women were injected, dating back to 1995 if not earlier. not sure if this is the standard now for tetanus. i wouldn't be surprised at all if mirena had some anti-fertility component. in any case, definitely check with your doctor, see if anti-hcg antibodies are present in your body. good luck, emily.

I had 4 wonderful children, and then got the mirena iud. I had it removed on November 30th, had my period 2 days later, and got a positive pregnancy test on December 27th. Strong hormones I guess. I have several friends who have had similar luck getting pregnant right away after removal. I wish all of your luck.

I read on a website that the reason they want you to have concieved a child before you have it is that there is a 20% infertility rate afterwards. When I had my Mirena inserted in 2002 there was no warning of that. I have even had microscopic surgery to look for the reason of infertility but I am sure it was the Mirena...I had to have it removed within a year from infections...I also have a sister-in-law that had three kids prior and is now infertile after getting the mirena...I also have a friend who had for 6 months then had to have it removed and got cervical cancer a month later...Too many coincidences...

Same story here. Had the Mirena inserted in 2004, and removed in 2009. I had a complete cessation of periods and several other affects, such as migraines. The information that was available at insertion about this method of birth control was much different than it is today. I had three sucessful pregnancies beforehand, and was once nicknamed "Fertile Mertyle". Have been trying for over a year now with zero success, and was recently diagnosed with a ruptured ovarian cyst. I fully attribute all of these complications to this horrible device, and wish I had never elected to have it.

I also had mine inserted in 2004 and removed in 2005. I have 3 children, but have been trying since 2009 to get pregnant...2.5 years:( I was not aware or made aware that the IUD could cause infertility. I am very angry and feel like I have also been robbed. It is very sad that there is nothing that we can do about it.

Mirena and the effects
I had a child March of 2008, I then elected to have themirena put in in June of 2008. I had the mirena in for 13 months, when my husband and I decided to try for another child. I have had 2 horrible miscarriages since and not much luck wth getting pregnant. We planned for 3 children and I would be furious if this device is the cause for my problems. With my miscarriages I was in the OR several times.

The same thing happened to me. Had the merina for 5 years.Had it removed 2 years this May. We have been trying to conceive and nothing. There was no warning from my doc. that 20% of women will have trouble conceiving when removed. This sh**ty a** birth control might have ruined my chances of having one more child and I was once too nicknamed "fretile mertyle". Very up setting, good luck to everyone here!

I had the mirena put in after my second child was born. My doctor said it was perfect for us since we had 2 kids and wanted to wait a while for the 3rd. It has now been over 3 years since I have had it removed and we haven''t been able to have another child. It took my husband and I both less than one month to get pregnant with both our other children. If my doctor had told me there was a 20% chance of infertility I would have never had that horrible thing put in my body.

Pregancy after Mirena
Hi all, I had the mirena for 4 years. Had it removed in January. I had light bleeding when it was removed and then my period came the following month. I have had four periods since the removal, all of them were on time just of by a day or two. Did the OPK this month, it showed that I ovulated, but AF is here yet another time. I am really worried now, because I have three boys and now we are trying for the girl. I really hope that I did not mess up myself by using the mirena. Can anyone with a similiar situation share some light on this saddening issue. Thanx. and baby dust and glue to alllllllll!

No more babies after Mirena IUD
Mirena horror stories! I am the same, fell pregnant without blinking, had 3 healty pregnancies and births, after 10 years decided its time for number 3. Result - miscarriage at 8 weeks. 1 year later - fell pregnant again - no such luck - miscarriage number 2! I blame the Mirena 100%. My friend had 3 healty pregnancies and births, had the Mirena for 3 years then decided to have it removed - fell pregnant miscarriage at 8 weeks. It has happened to her 3 times! The Mirena people are well aware of this - It is time they warn the innocent moms that their product can and will cause major problems should you want another child later!!!!

I had my son in may 2006 3mnths later I had mirena put in. When our son turned two I had it removed and have been trying to concieve since. I have had fertility tests and have be classed pretty much infertile. I had never thought that the mirena could be to blame as our son was spontanious conception, I never had any trouble with the Mirena I thought it was the best thing ever. Until now, after reading all of the posts I am pretty convinced that it may be the cause of my infertility.
We are able to apply for funding for IVF in another year when our son is 5yrs, but the waiting list is another 2yrs after that. It's devistating to know that this device can be thesource of so many peoples unhappiness.
I hope that this isn't the case for you. good luck

I am so sorry to hear this. I sincerely hope that what ever is wrong will be sorted quickly. Maybe look at some alternative therapies. Maybe there is something that can be done, we just got to figure out what. I my case I fall pregnant, but then loose the baby - why? too thin uterine wall that makes implantation impossible? not enough progesterone? You don't fall pregnant? or do you perhaps conceive but miscarry very very early, that you do not realize it?
Just wondering. I wish you all the best.

I had mirena for 2.5 years, had it taken out and was preg within a month. I had another put in 8 weeks post partum with my son. I had a totally different experience with it than I had before. I was experiencing pain and constipation for 13 months. I was told it was due to hormones because I was nursing. When I stopped nursing I returned to the dr because I was afraid someting was wrong with my bowels. I had a CT scan done to only to find my IUD was perforating my uterus and I had developed a ovarian cyst that was 10cm across and pusing on my colon. I went back to the origional dr who put it in. She told me it wasnt perforating my uterus because she could see my strings (even tho the CT report said it was) and yanked it out. She also told me my cyst would go away on its own. After spending a weekend in pain and dealing with dizziness I went for a second opinion. My new dr told me I had to have surgery for the cyst. I had the surgery done May 4th, 2010. During surgery he found excessive amounts of blood in my abdominal cavity from where the puncture was. He aslo did a hysterscopy (where they look inside your uterus with a camera) and found that over 80% of my uterus is scared and my tubes are now blocked due to the scar tissue mirena caused. He said I have less that 1/10th of a chance of ever becoming pregnant again. He said it was apparent my IUD was not put in correctly and I had been walking around with a punctured uterus for 13 months. He also said the cyst was caused by the IUD. Im now looking to contact an attorney to sue the dr due to neglagience. Anyway...that is my story...I wish you ladies luck!

OMG! So sorry to hear about this. Were you successful w/an attorney? I too was told I have a cyst that will eventually go away on it's own but I've been having extreme cramping & bleeding lasting 6-9 days since having my IUD removed Aug 2010. We're having difficulty conceiving after a year of trying and I was on the Mirena for a little over a year. It's so upsetting to think the Mirena may be the reason we're not conveiving.

Problems getting pregnant after using the Mirena
Reading all of these stories is really interesting. I was pregnant with my first baby so quickly we had barely had time to start thinking about children. After the birth, I used the Mirena for 2 years and then had it removed. My period didn't come back for two years and I was sure I was infertile as a result of the Mirena. I did clomid etc. It was very hard. Then about three years after having it removed I got pregnant and had no problems. Reading all of this helps me to feel confident that there is something about the Mirena that is causing this - but at least for me, after several years my body finally adjusted itself.
Then stupidly I used it again after my second child - this time after about a year I knew something was wrong ( I was living in rural Africa) and let it go for about a year. Finally I travelled to a good hospital and found that I had a cycst on one side -- when they removed the cycst - they found that the IUD had perforated my uterus in two places. They had no idea and said that it wasn't possible to see on the scan. So now I wonder about being pregnant again - they say that the perforations could be a risk and that the uturine wall will be weak - not sure I want another child but I certainly think that the literature isn't honest about the risks that come with the mirena. The only thing I would say for all people who can't get pregnant, is give yourself time- your body may eventually be able to reset itself.

Infertility due to Mirena?!?
I had 2 unplanned pregnancies and one planned, but then decided to "take a break" before we had one more. I opted for the Mirena IUD, but only had it in for 6 months. The reason we had it removed was because it was uncomfortable and I had terrible cramping with it. After that, I used the Nuvaring for about 14 months. I have since been birth control free for 2 years and nothing!! When I got off the Nuvaring, I got pregnant 5 months later only to miscarry at 10 weeks, and I ended up in the ER. I had emergency surgery and stayed for 3 days due to complications. Three months later, I found out I was pregnant again and micarried at 8 weeks. This has been devestating to my husband and I. With my 3 kids, I wound up pregnant without any kind of "trying," and now to have had 2 terrible miscarriages after Mirena. Makes me wonder...

The world is overpopulated people!! Stop trying to contribute to the misery on this earth; look around, so many don't even have enough to eat! If you want a child, adopt one who is in need. But please don't be so selfish as to bring yet another human onto this sick and dying planet when there are so many unwanted children to whom you could give a home!

You are cruel and cold! I appreciate your compassion for adopting those who need a home but... maybe you should check into adoption not only in the states but also abroad... you will find that adoption is not as easy as you may think... there is more red tape to go through and it is so expensive it is amazing that any children are being adopted! Since when should you have to pay for a child?? I understand the paper work, lawyers, etc... but in this day and age it is nearly impossible to find a LEGAL adoption agency who can assist you for less than 50k... that does not include the court fees or lawyers... and if a newborn... the prenatal fees, etc... When I looked into it I found that it would essentially cost me anywhere from 65k - 100k minimum just to have a baby to love! Now you tell me that is reasonable!! As for Mirena... IT MOST DEFINITELY CAN AND WILL CAUSE SEVERE INFERTILITY!! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE!! My story will follow...

Maybe not everyone carries your same cynical view, so please keep your personal opinions to yourself. I understand this might be difficult for someone who has ZERO compassion for other peoples pain and suffering. You're so willing to speak out for the pain and suffering of children you don't even know and yet you're so quick to judge and cast judgement on women who've been robbed unjustly. Who the hell are you to tell anyone that they shouldn't have a baby. That's not your place, you've obviously never experiance the loss of a unborn child. Do the world a favor and DO NOT reproduce, the world will be a much better place without kids raised by cynical idiots like yourself.Get the hell off this forum and go to some radicalist forum where you're welcome by other cynical idiots who have zero compassion for others.

everyone has a right to have a biological child if they wish to. You adopt a child if that's what you want to do but don't tell other's that they need to stop having biological children. I have four children, I support them & I would have another....I have NO desire to adopt but that's not to say that I would discourage someone else from adopting. You're opinion is cynical & I'm glad that most people don't think like you.
