So I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted (two impacted) last Tuesday, a week ago yesterday. I still have a little pain - nothing too serious...but around Sunday I started noticing a bit more of an ache from my left bottom socket...also there was a gross taste coming from it as well every now and then. I went back to my dental surgeon on Monday and he flushed it all out and told me that I looked like I have the start of an infection so he gave me a perscription for amoxicillin. This is my third day on the antibiotics...it does seem to be getting a little better but every now and then I still get that really gross taste. How long is it generally before the pills clear up the infection or how long shoud I wait before I go back to the surgeon again??? Thanks!

I had my wisdom teeth taken out as well but not so brave, only one at a time. Last week my last one was out.

Normally it takes up to 3 weeks for the holes to close completely. The bottom holes are prone to getting infections I dont know why maybe gravity of food getting easier there.

I had an infection on the bottom side couple of years ago and formed a hollow cavity, usually that happens when people smoke but i dont smoke so just my luck.

Smoking largely affects healing process and people who smoke will more likely get an infection but I am sure your dentist would have told you that already.

I think you should wait and finish the end of your antibiotic course, with some antibiotics it takes up to two days to reach the active phase to start working.

Also in a lot of cases the dentist would have prescribed amoxicillin and clavulanic acid as the acid enhances amoxicillin effectivenes.

You should rince your mouth every our with salt water as that helped me, also rinse after every meal. Not too harshly but sort of take a sip of salt water and and move you head from side to side getting in all the places, if you do it harshly you might irritate the gum and it will bleed again.

To make salt solution I put one teaspoon of salt into a cup of water and mix.

I would still eat soft foods if I were you as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions! I don't smoke either so that's a good thing I guess...lol...I just can't wait till this gets all healed and better...I can deal with a little bit of pain but the taste is just awful! I've been rinsing with peridex (perscribed by my dentist) - its hard getting into the holes but he gave me a surringe for that as well...good luck with your last one and thanks again!

Thanks Caroline. I'm probably just overreacting a little...I'm very nervous when it comes to infections and such...I called my dental surgeon again today (he's soon going to think I'm nuts...lol) and he told me to give it another day and if I'm still having issues with it to come back and see him so he can have a look.

I think you were wise doing that...It's better to see him on a Friday, rather than be miserable over the weekend...Hope everything goes well...Take care....
