My daughter is 5 1/2 months old and we have noticed that for the past three months she does a breathing thing. She will scrunch her face and release air, during these times she will track us, but kind of spaces out. We spoke with our pediatrician, who sent us to a Neurologist. After an EEG, the Neurologist was talking about hospitalization and mental retardation, but here is the thing, my daughter does not have any developmental delays. None. The Neurologist even stated this. So without developmental delays and NO convulsions, can my daughter be diagnosed with seizures? He wants to put her on topamax. I am just having a hard time because I am not seeing any effects of her "breathing thing". HELP!

I understand your dilema. It is possible for people to develop normally and yet have to physically developmental problems. She is so little! Did they do an MRI scan as well? If not, I would highly recommend that be done before any medication be given, which meds could merely cover up the symptoms of what could be a bigger issue.

You are right to refuse the medication. You can also get a second opinion. Most doctors just hand out medications like candy when it is not needed. Please keep us updated on how your daughter is doing!
