Q: Individual Insurance for Multiple States?

Hi, I am self employed and my business requires me to live in different states for extended periods of time during the year. I might spend a few months in Chicago, and then a few months in Wisconsin, or I might not even know where I will need to live. I am currently living in Providence, RI.

I am a healthy, young male who graduated from college recently enough that until the first of this year, I was covered under my father's policy.

What are my options for an individual health plan that would allow me to seek health care in just about any state? How much does residence matter? My only permanent address is in Wisconsin, but I do not live there the majority of the year.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Individual Insurance
You certainly have many options when it comes to getting individual insurance. First, it will matter as to which address you choose at your primary residence (for two reasons). First, your residency will determine the plans that are available to you. Secondly, you should shop around using all three of your residencies to see which would be the most cost-effective (certain areas have higher insurance costs). I have a small website (link is below) showing some good online retailers that could sell you insurance. I'm sure there's also agents in your area that you could call to request quotes. Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

Lastly, regardless of which location you use as your residency, if you're very healthy, I'd recommend looking for an HSA-qualified plan (it'll most likely be your best bet).
