Q: Increasing abdominal pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 24th, 2009
My husband has been experiencing abdominal pain now for the pain 6 months the intensity of the pain is increasing and now spread into lower back, not isolated to the left or right side. Has been to 3 doctors and a specialist all blood tests and an ultrasound did not detect anything abnormal. Pain increases at night times but is now a major problem through out the day. Does not seem to be food related as we have tried different foods and diets and does not make any difference. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as medical professionals are just passing us from one to the next as they don't seem to have a clue. Pain is almost crippling and feels muscular.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
The symptoms your husband is experiencing (abdominal pain for 6 months, the intensity of the pain is increasing and now spread into lower back, not isolated to the left or right side) can be due to excessive gas or IBS. The pain as you explain is generalized and not located to one part of the abdomen. IBS is generally diagnosed by elimination of other causes.
One suggestion that may help is to keep a stress diary. Note what your husband eats through out the day and his pain. The intensity, when it comes, and its relation to food. This will help to rule out any connection of food with the pain.
Along with this stress diary kept for a week consult a gastroenterologist since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net. Hope this helps. Take care!
