my history; 1961, 7 years old, I had a sever head injury. I only remeber 2 days from that event, standing in the kitchen blood squishing out of my shoes, and then at home in bed, head covered in bandages and a couple tubes sticking out of the bandages. every since then I have had sever headaches, as a child when I had them, I used to hide in the dark under the bed.

the headaches are preceded by hot, red ears, and a runny nose. the eye on the side of the head that hurts is usually very tender, painful to touch and feels swollen. sometimes I smell cigarette smoke, though no one smokes in our house. the pain is sharp and stabbing, mixed with pain that keeps rythm with my heart beat.

status quoe for me has always been about 3 days a week of intense headaches, diagnosed years ago as variant migraine/cluster headaches. once a year they will last for 12-14 days 24/7.

currently, may 2009 these headaches increased to a daily event, all day every day, after using fioricet/w cod since 2000, the med has become ineffective in relieving some of the pain unless I use a double dose. I visited the DR and explained the new symptoms, after a neuro test I had mild neuro deficits in a couple areas. I have been a writer for 15 years and suddenly I seem to have lost all of my creative talent, can't come up with anything for my work.

I am going to see a neurologist on the 29th because I feel this is out of the realm of a general practioner.

any thoughts on this?
any suggestions?

thanks in advance for any input.

just a note on this, I had a ct-scan of my head, the GP said it looked normal. in an unrelated event I had a CT of the abdomen and they found I had a retroaortic left renal vein, I found something about the "nutcracker syndrome" but not how it might be related to my headaches if it is at all

another new thing during these headaches is numbness on my kips and finger tips
