Q: Incisional hernia repair
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 9th, 2009
I have an incisional hernia from a gallbladder removal last year. I was waiting to get it repaired. It has become increasingly painful, especally when I cough. It is making me nausous, and I wake up sick every morning b/c I sleep on my stomach. Do I need to fix this quickly. I wasn't in a hurry to repair it but now I am a little worried. I am not running a fever or anything and no other symptoms.

As long as there are no signs of intestinal obstruction (e.g., a distended tender belly with associated severe nausea and vomiting, and not passing gas or stool from your rectum), surgery is probably not an emergent requirement. However, if you are nonetheless having severe symptoms, then having this hernia repaired sooner than later is prudent.
