Q: Inadequate cerebral blood supply and previous heart condition
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 28th, 2009
Last week I drank a double espresso on an empty stomach. My hands were shaking so I decided to smoke some high grade marijuana. I went to a restaurant shortly after and had a panic attack in which i had to leave. I couldnt breathe or swallow and thought i was dying. Ever since this happened I have a constant dream-like dizzy feeling which is really scaring me. Things seem to be brighter, nothing looks the same to me anymore, its a very scary and weird feeling. I try to focus and tell myself im okay but I cant get over this dream like feeling. The first thing that came to my mind was i had something seriously wrong like a brain tumor. I have always had a lot of stress and depression in my life. My girlfriend is pregnant and my 9 year old dog just died. I fell as if im a zombie. I get more dizzy around lots of people. My question is am I going crazy? Did I fry my brain from the caffeine and pot? Why do I have this weird feeling? please please help me..im scared to go to my doc

The symptoms you reported might be due to an inadequate blood supply to the brain. You might have had a previous heart condition that only showed itself when triggered with the complete absorption of a large quantity of caffeine (espresso on empty stomach). The gasping for breath occurred because the heart was stimulated by the caffeine to work harder, thus needing more blood to bring the nutrients than it was able to pump.

The symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have heart damage. The stress, both physical and emotional, might have contributed to this condition. However, a heart examination at a cardiologist is recommended. The doctor might want to do a physical examination, certain blood tests, as well as an ECG and heart ultrasound examination.
