Q: Inability to lift up legs

Hello all, I have been having back pains for the past three years. Each time the back pain comes, I have severe difficulties in lifting up my legs. It has gotten worse recently, and sometimes it takes a day or so for the pain to subside enough for me to walk normally. What is it, and what should I do?

Thank you for your responses.

EDIT: I forgot to add, the pain starts to build up when I'm running or carrying a load.

Can you provide a description of your pain? Do you have any numbness, tingling, burning pain?

There's an overall burning pain in the back, but everytime I try to lift my leg there will be a sharp pain coming along with it.

It sounds like you may have some nerve compression in your spine. The causes could be many, including spinal stenosis, disc protrustions etc.

What you need it be evaluated by a spine specialist to determine what may or may not be going on.

You need to see either an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in spine or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines only.

Until you have been evaluated and probably had an MRI of your spine, it is difficult to give you much advise.

I suggest that you stop doing any running and carrying anything heavy until you find out what is going on with your spine.

Running is stressing the spine as is carrying heavy objects.

You can try ice to try and alleviate some of your pain, if that doesn't help, you can try moist heat.

Ibuprofen may help by reducing some of the inflammation and the pain.

But, what you really need to do is see a spine specialist to determine what is wrong.

Good luck
