Q: improving lung capacity

i am trying to increase my lung capacity but i am slightly unsure about what problems it may cause.... ill explain

to try and improve my lung capacity i have been using a technique called packing, where i breath in as much air as my diaphragm will pull in, then i fill my mouth with air, then sort of swallow it so it goes down to my lungs as well, forcing it into my lungs, im just wondering if doing this can cause any damage to my lungs, or maybe push them against my heart/the blood vessels around my heart,

if there are any suggestions someone can give if there are any better ways of what i am doing i am all ears!

I've never heard of doing that, can I ask where you learned to do that?

I'm a swimmer and I am familiar with exercises that increase my lung capacity and efficiency. Would you be comfortable doing drills in a swim pool? (Just standard swimming front crawl laps).

As you swim, you can decrease the number of breaths you take per length. Start out easy by doing a small set (200 yards X 4) For the first 50 yards breath once every three strokes, then another 50 breathing once every four strokes, then once every five strokes then once every six strokes.

When that gets easier you can start doing more yards and fewer breaths. The important thing is to relax when you do these.

And when you get REALLY good, you can start to try 50 yard, no breathers. These are tough so be sure that you give yourself enough time between reps to catch your breath.

i learnt it from a documentary on TV, a woman who holds the deepest dive on a breath hold, i believe she got 300 metres down, and she said about packing at a few points in the programme.

i am not a swimmer but i believe you presumed that from my post lol, no worries, im going on holiday to egypt soon and i remember a few years back... i went to mexico and did competitions with people in the pool at who can hold their breath for the longest, at the moment i can hold for around 2 and a half minutes, this was all due to aerobic training, i just wanna hold it for longer using breathing exercises lol, can i do what you suggested but instead of swimming, do running or something?

I didn't presume you were a swimmer. I am a swimmer and that's how I know to do breathing exercises. That's why I asked if you'd be comfortable swimming laps while doing these exercises, if you were a swimmer then I would have known you've done these before Wink

I'm not sure about holding your breath when running, I try to avoid running whenever I can so I'm not familiar with how runners do their breathing exercises.

I'll look around for awhile and see what I can find, however if getting in a pool is an option for you then you may want to try that for awhile.

May I ask why you want to increase your lung capacity?
