implanon lasts for 3 years. the removal is very painful.
i had it removed after two years and it took half an hour to remove as they had to detach it from the muscle. i suffered alot of brusing and am left with a very visible scar.

Ouch
I had Implanon for 3 years and loved it. When my 3 years was completed, I wanted to get it removed and replaced. Well it didn't go as well. On Jun 19 was attempt number one. The nurse was in the wrong spot. Once I realized she had already cut and dug. Jun 25 was the second attempt.....no luck. The same nurse went in the correct spot, but cldnt find or visually see the rod. So she cldnt removed anything. So now not only do I have 2 permanent scars but I also still have the rod in smh. It's now Jun 27th. I have to get a OB/GYN surgeon to remove it on Jul 17th. Please keep all fingers crossed. After all of that. I will not be getting it replaced. I'm 27 years old. No kids yet. I been practicing safe safe since I became sexually active. But I guess this is Gods way of telling me, its time. I'm not married. Dont really care
to be. But I do have a significant other whom also don't have any kids. So I guess this is our year. My arm is very sore, bruised and swollen. All I can say is I wldnt wish this on my worse enemy.

Implant
My friend has been on the implant for 3 years although she is worried as it was due out ten days ago. Can she still run the risk of getting pregnant or is that only after it has been taken out ???

I have my third implant in, I have 3 children so the implanon hasn't affected my fertility. I have had no problems having the implant inserted or removed and no side affects other than very few periods, which in my opinion is a bonus! It is so easy to have it inserted and then you can forget about it for 3 years, I would highly recommend it.!

In theory, you are now unsafe. In practice it is not like an on/off switch. It will likely protect you longer. But how long nobody can predict, and do you really want to trust 'likely'?
