Q: Idiopathic 6th Nerve Palsy

Anyone any ideas what to do for Idiopathic 6th Nerve Palsy - possibly microvascular -resulting in double vision (Diplopia)? Having double vision since mid- August. First bout was Oct 07 to Feb 08. Prism allows me to work and drive and stay active. What can I do? If it stays as is - can I go for surgery? Does anyone have any experiences to share?

Cranial mononeuropathy VI is treated with corticosteroids, which can reduce swelling and relieve pressure on the nerve. Until the nerve heals, wearing an eye patch may relieve double vision. Have you consulted with a health care provider at this time?

6th Nerve Palsy
Yes, have met with 3 different Opthamologists and one Neurologist - saying best to wait it out. Monitor for year. Then possibly operate. No one has mentioned patching eye. Is this a normal course of action to take. I have a prism on glasses in front of right eye - it allows me to drive, work, play sport. Or should I be resting? Any advice on how to proceed welcome.

Improving
Four days now and no need for glasses. Blurry on extreme right. Hopefully on the mend.

Double vision
16 year old daughter. Woke seeing double on a Friday, ER Friday at noon, MRI Tuesday. MRI normal. Had her seen by an opthamologist. Has mentioned 6th nerve palsy. She is really getting frustrated. Having to wear prism glasses and contacts. Is a cheerleader, outstanding tennis player and is an honor student. The frustration is making her very angry. She is having a hard time focusing on the tennis ball being that it is a small object that moves fast. Dr. is saying wait it out and let mother nature take its course. I'm afraid to sit on this for too long not knowing what the outcome could be. Can anyone help?

Response to Mother of 16 year old
My eyes have been good now for a few weeks. Waiting it out paid off. I never wore patch, just prism glasses. Made playing basketball difficult, but now that it has come right I'm glad a stayed in shape and stuck with team. I've never got any answers. The idea was to wait one year and then possible operation - something no Opthamologist or Neurologist favoured as an option. I wish your daughter well. My first bout lasted Oct. to Jan. Second bout much shorter Mid August to Mid October. I would suggest keep looking for answers, but for me had numerous test and the only answer was 6th nerve palsy....yet no cure. Best of luck.

Double Vision Back
Any suggestions? Double vision has returned. Thus is my 3rd time experiencig double vision. Went to Opthamologist yesterday...same result. Yes, double, just wait and do nothing. This time however, vision is worse ever - Prism glasses not doing much to help with sight. Must cover one eye to drive. Anyone have nay suggestions?

Diagnosed With Tumor
Looks like a Tumor on/in nasal passage was the culprit. Biopsy results due back next week. Possible Lymphoma - to be treated by 4-8 weeks of radiotherapy.

I have double vision
I am twenty years old and I too have double vision. Mine started a week ago but have had prior experiences before. I had it Aug of 2007 to beginning OCT 2007. It went away in two months and have read that that is normally what happens. My advice is to wear an eye patch, it really helps, and it entertains children, they love pirates!

Maybe not cancer
somewhat positive news, left yesterday - Oconologist says no cancer in second biopsy, sending out for second opinion - will send to Neuro-Radiologist on Monday, they'll call me up mon or tues for another MRI, looks like it could be vascular which would be great news...Wrecked today after Lumber Puncture and Bone Marrow tests...John
