I developed idiopathic epilepsy at the age of 16. I have been taking sodium valporate 1000mg daily since then. At first doctor told me that after 3 years from the start date of first attack, they would lower my dose and would stop medications. However for some reason or the other whenever the dose was lowered, I would get seizure. Its been almost 10 years since I have been taking these medicines. I would like to know that is it possible in my case to stop the medications. No one in my family pedigree has ever had epilepsy. I developed it due to stress. Everytime the attack has occurred when the dose was lowered at the 3rd year from 1000mg to 800mg 600 mg etc but the medicines were never withdrawn completely. Have I become genetically mutated?Should i take the medications life long? Please help me.

I was in the same position as you and I am now 40. I tried several times to stop my medication and failed. My advice to you would be carry on with your level of medication it is only a low level. I have been put on much higher levels due to a severe viral infection.
