Q: Hysteria and its symptoms
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 18th, 2008
For many years when my daughter gets heated (she is now 20) she temporarily loses her vision and when this happens sometimes she gets a small warning as her face feels cool or flushed. Twice she lost vision and was not heated (maybe her body temperature was hot?) . She does not lose hearing or feel faint and within seconds up to maybe a minute her vision returns to normal. She has had many tests which included her heart, MRI of the brain (as I have MS), blood work, blood pressure, eye specialist including an neuro-optholmologist who thought maybe she is having migraines but she has no pain associated with it, only extreme fatique. All other tests have been normal.

We have researched and can not find anything remotely close to what she is experiencing or even what other tests, if any, would be needed to find out what this is or could be.

Thanks,

Zigemyster

Vision loss when becoming heated is a sign of hysteria. Hysteria is a psychiatric disorder where strong emotional conflicts are expressed with physical symptoms (blindness, deafness, palsy, seizures, etc.). Negative medical tests support the possibility that your daughter's condition is mental rather than organic.

You may want to ask for a second opinion from an ophthalmologist and neurologist.
