Please can someone advise me re time off work?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a week ago.Looking back, I feel I have plodded on for a long time with this disease. I have most of the symptoms, the worst being that I feel very tired and lethargic most of the time. The doctor told me that my blood results were such that she wanted to see me again within the month.I feel I am struggling from day to day and would love to have a rest. I have been upset because my mam has just phoned to say that she wishes I would go back to the doctor and request a sick note. She says I look terrible, I am not myself and they are all worried about me.

I would really love a rest, but the point is, I understand that it can take some time before the dose of levothyroxine is prescribed at the correct level for me - its a bit like how long is a piece of string, and I can't be off work for months. Sorry to go on, but would it be normal for a doctor to prescribe rest for someone in this situation, or do people just get on with it?

Thanks for your help,

Sandra

Please do not become hyper due to your recently diagnosed Hypothyroid.the feelings and tiredness you are feeling is just symptom of thyroid .I have hypothyroid from last 3 years but if you take this problem as very serious problem it will not cure you..so just let it be..as per as your rest is concerned try to do some Yoga which will refresh you and feel you energetic to go to work..but if u pushed yourself back..u will not come out from your sickness so better adopt a healthy lifestyle ,u will definitely look better and go to work without asking sick note from doctor..i am not sure if any doctor can advise rest for thyroid patients. And your medicine will definitely make you better in a months time.wish you a healthy time ahead!

get a sick note
get a sick note. i went to the dr and asked for a sick note. you need to rest! your body needs to recover and its best you let your boss know whats going on so they don't think you just want to avoid work. don't listen to that other poster.

You did get a prescription, though? Right? He's not putting it off for a month? If he is, he's a quack and you need to see a different doctor and get medication sooner than that.

Rest may help some, but you're not going to feel better until your thyroid is back on track. It could take several months to get your dosage right. Cardinal rules: Don't alter the dosage yourself without your doctor's approval; Until you get your TSH in the normal range AND feel like yourself again, keep getting blood tests every two or three months so your dosage can be adjusted; Follow the medication instructions about taking it at the same time every day, on an empty stomach, not with certain minerals (like iron), etc.

I've been where you are. You can sleep 18 hours a day and it can still not feel like enough. But you do need more rest and to take it easy. If you feel you can take time off, do so. If you worry that it would damage your job security or something and you feel you can get through it, then don't. It's your life. You're an adult and you know how you are feeling better than anyone. If you feel bad enough to take time off, do it. Don't push yourself to the point of exhaustion.

I hope you feel better soon. I'm also very glad that they found out what was wrong and it's a pretty easy fix.
