Q: Hypothyroidism symptoms and growth

Hi, my dr recently found a lump on my thyroid, and I went through numerous tests to diagnose this growth. The specialist I was referred to said that even if it isn't cancer it can become troublesome at a later stage, so I decided to have half of my thyroid removed. I'm also ttc so I decided to have it done immediately (15 October was the soonest I could get) but now my question is this - when they had my thyroid function tested they found there's nothing wrong, but I have so many symptoms of hypothyroidism! My hair is falling out like mad (have been for a year), my skin is very dry, I'm so tired all the time and I've been struggling to get pregnant this last year (no success). (I do get regular periods, it's just VERY short and light). Could this be that my thyroid is after all not functioning as it should or could this growth have any effect?

Sorry for the long question, and thank you for any advice.

Vanessa

The National Library of Medicine has a patient tutorial about thyroid surgery . I think that the answer to your question might be here.

Thank you, I had a look. I understand everything and the symptoms at the hypothyroidism is very much like me at this stage. I used to have beautiful hair, but now it's so grassy and dead and handfuls of it falls out at a time . My skin, especially my scalp is so dry it's unbearable. I just hope after the op, the dr prescribes the meds sufficiently to fix this, but he says it's normal according to the bloodtests, so I really don't know. I just feel so dreadful all the time I hope this is the answer.

I hope it is, too. When is your operation planned?

On the 15th of October. Can't be soon enough. I'm just sad/mad that it's only being diagnosed now. I went to my gp in April because I started getting sores all over my body and my glands in my neck was very swollen. The dr said it was a bacterial infection and gave me some antibiotics. The swelling never went down, but I never paid attention.

Unfortunately, we cannot influence the past. So, I'd suggest that you focus on what you CAN influence now, your operation and recovery. Imagine the final outcome of the surgery and SEE yourself better. I think that positive thinking can really help! Smile

Yes, I know there's nothing we can do about the past - sadly. This past year have just been a nightmare. I really do hope this is the last of my bad news and that next year will look brighter. I really hope this is my problem though, otherwise I will have to go for a hysteroscopy too, which I won't have money for after this op, so it'll have to wait.

Just for interest sake - I've read this morning on a site that if you have an underactive thyroid one of the symptoms can be intolerance to alcohol (my body starts aching after one glass of wine) and high colesterol (I had my cholesterol tested in April and it's a bit high and I don't think my diet is too unhealthy)

It sounds like you're really getting closer to understanding your condition. THe more we look, the more we can learn! What exactly is the name of the operation or procedure they plan to do?

A right thyroid lobectomy. I've got a big growth on the right side of my thyroid. The drs said that it has no effect on my thyroid function, but then my thyroid isn't working properly itself (even though they say it does). I just feel that it can't be coincidence that I have most of the symptoms for an underactive thyroid and they say it's working properly. If it was one or two symptoms I would've let it go, but it's a LOT - Dry skin, grassy hair, mild depression, fogginess in the head, TIREDNESS, intolerance to alcohol, highish cholesterol, unexplained rashes, infertility, hair falling out. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Would you say it's coincidence?
