Q: Hypothyroid symptoms worse with treatment

I'm 48 and I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism around 6 months ago after 5 years of suffering with a severe anxiety disorder. I am now up to 100mg of levothyroxine a day and was told on last test that my bloods are now normal. However, i feel worse than ever. I am so tired that i can hardly walk a lot of the time and sleep almost all day. My hair continues to fall out when brushed and my weight continues to go up. For the past few days i have had constant headaches and feel light headed a lot of the time. Am i not supposed to feel better on medication? Isn't 6 months on it enough for me to start feeling better? I feel worse and to be honest as an anxiety sufferer to begin with, i'm starting to get a bit afraid.

I had a circulatory test for my legs and arms a couple of weeks ago and my blood pressure was tested. it was normal, but when the nurse tested it five minutes later it had shot up to 180/? [sorry can't remember other number]. Doctor says he wants to see me in few weeks to check again because as it was normal and suddenly shot up it is likely it is my anxiety disorder that caused it that day. The light headedness for a few days and headached are worrying me though. I feel generally very poorly and don't seem to be getting any better with treatment. I get so much pain in my legs when i lay down at night or sit down. They ache and cramp and i also have a burning sensation in them. When i get up in the morning they are so stiff its as though i've run a marathon the day before. It really worries me. My doctor says he has never heard of this being caused by hypothyroidism and has done nothing. Just constant stress for me.

Can anyone give me any advice plz? Sorry for rambling but i can't seem to get any answers anywhere to ease my mind.

Try another med, maybe another doctor
Hi,
I can sympathize with your situation as I had the same problem. Normal tests but still felt BAD. Unfortunately, many doctors don't tell you that you have options, like trying another medication called Armour Thyroid. Sometimes the levothyroxine just doesn't work for some people even though it makes nice looking clinical tests. Your tests look good but you don't FEEL good. How you feel should matter to your doctor. So maybe it's time to see a real endocrinologist who can help you.

Have you ever heard of Mary Shomon? She is a long time victim of hypothyroidism and has learned a lot about this disease. Mary has written a great book on the subject and knows all that a lay person could possibly know about thyroid problems.

Best of luck! I've been there and my advice is to persevere until you find a doctor that really HELPS YOU. That's what it's all about!
Arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can.

Many thanks for your response. I will mention this to the doctor when i next visit. I went today and my bloods are no longer normal and he says i have to go back to 75mg. On top of that i have very high blood pressure which i've never suffered with before so am also now on beta blockers. I'm a single parent with a young son and am quite afraid now.
