I am pretty sure that I am Hypoglycemic. I have violent attacks from blood sugar drops - especially in the last year. I can, however, recall experiencing these overwhelming spells as far back as 15 years ago. I don't know where to begin as I have not had health insurance for the past 6 months.
This past Saturday was a major awakening for me. I'm a 30 year old single mom who decided to organize a play date to go mini golfing. Two other kids came met with us with parents. One parent was an hour late and pushed everything back an hour to begin with. To make a long story short, that hour in addition to the delays on a busy golf course brought us to 9:00 PM and still no dinner. My sugar started dropping on the course and I ran to the concession stand to find nothing healthy - just candy and soda. I downed a coke as I knew what was coming wasn't pretty. I know now that the soda spiked my sugar level way up, then caused a traumatic crash by the time we ate. The women I was with were NOT sympathetic toward my grumpy demanding attitude for food, my trembling, my confusion, my TEARS out of nowhere! It was a nightmare. I made a fool of myself.
To give you an idea of how bad it gets - I have tested my sugar on my stepdad's and my aunt's diabetic test kits. My blood glucose level has gone as low as 48 on more than one occurrence. Also, when it starts, I get dizzy, confused, forgetful, panicky, clammy and sweaty, feverish feeling, depressed and doomed, I become unable to prioritize, I become fearful, I get nauseated, I have been at work and have had to lie down ANYWHERE and can't get up until well after I eat something, and I get angry when people start picking on me for my strange behavior (very defensive). Sometimes I will vomit and feel totally insane. I have also gained 30 lbs over the past 8 months. Also, I get sharp stomach pains and find myself doubled over during these "attacks". Once I eat, after a short while, I feel like myself again. I can't take this unstable way of life.
I don't know what to do. Does anyone have advice as to where I can begin? What kind of doctor should I see if I do? Are there clinics for this type of illness? Do you recommend a book (recipe book?) to educate myself? Please help!!!
