Q: Hypoglycemia etiquette ?

I have hypoglycemia so of course I eat often. I'm still struggling with the etiquette thing ya know? Like how do you explain to people especially like a new boss that you have to eat like every 2-3 hours? I feel like I'm apologizing for having to eat so often. Ya know how sometimes it may not be "Appropriate" like in a meeting, or socially if you are with a group at a "non mealtime".Any ideas for how to inform people without looking like a charity case?

Well, this is definitely a difficult thing. I was upset at first because of what you say, I didn't want to seem like I was looking for attention, I just wanted people to understand why I had to do what I was doing and not think I was some sort of special person who can do whatever they want. Best thing is to let your boss know first, and then if you can just send a mass email out to all the people you have contact with regularly at work and let them know your situation, that way they won't ask. If you can hold off on a meal during a meeting, just bring some nuts or something less obvious so it won't cause too much of a problem. Otherwise, you have to just say SCREW THEM. Do what you need to as you start the healing process. At restaurants, however, don't even bother explaining what's going on to the manager or waiter, just say 'I have allergies' and leave it at that, especially if you order a salad, steak, or whatever. If you say hypoglycemia they likely won't know what you mean and then ask a bunch of questions, but if you say allergies, you better believe they'll make sure you feel okay!

Hi Stan..here is my real reply..messed up the 1st one..lol..Thanks SO much for what you wrote! I related to it all especially "screw them"..I've said that to myself many times. I have a pt time job and have an office which is great. I eat whenever. But I start a 2nd job in Nov. assisting a writer. Most of the job is from home..yay!..but I will be assisting her at events like book signings,etc...What if one is at 12pm ish? A snack wont tide me over and it may be weird to eat then. I dont want to turn the job down cause of it. Do you think I should tell her days before the event OR maybe at the event "It may be a weird time but I need to eat now cause I'm hypo.." I hate feeling like I am apologizing for it! But I do everytime! Ugh..which approach do you think will be better? Since it's not a board meeting situation but an out in public one greeting people and stuff..So great to have support!

My family doesnt even get it! I'm 34- I shouldnt have to tell them when I with them...I have to eat. Once I was having a real bad episode in the streets of Brooklyn where I'm not familiar and my dad's wife was like in the middle of me looking for a place to get a quick bite, "You should see a therapist about this" (cause I was acting and talking all koo koo) And I tried explaining it in the past) Just had to get that off my chest! Thanks for listening/reading Smile
