It shouldn't cause any problems (that I know of anyway), as long as your lifestyle is healthy and your condition is under control. If you have no luck in 12 months then have your doctor check you out.

How long have you been eating only meat and veggies? If you do conceive, you may need more carbohydrate for the babies sake. Add in the odd serving (very small serving) of brown rice and see how you feel. A more balanced diet would be advisable.

PS I know a lady with type 1 diabetes, doesn't manage her condition very well unfortunately, but still managed to get pregnant easily on two occasions. The children are nice and healthy.

I am currently 38 weeks pregnant, and have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia since 2001. I did have 5 miscarriages. However, that was more than likely due to an incompetent cervix rather than my hypoglycemia. I would recommend taking prenatals now, to prepare for any upcoming pregnancy, and to also take Victoria's advice on eating more carbs while you are pregnant. Eating many small meals a day is more important while pregnant than ever. And don't overtax yourself!

Unless there are other serious conditions you haven't mentioned, on a sensible diet I see no reason at all why someone with reactive hypoglycemia wouldn't be perfectly fine. That's like saying someone with wheat intolerace can't have a child :-/

I know a type 1 diabetic with learning difficulties who's had and raised her children perfectly fine.

If you're concerned then speak to your own doctor.

It's a shame your mother isn't more supportive, maybe she just needs time to get used to the idea.

ya i know she wants a grandchild, would be her first, my boyfriend has a daughter from a prior realionship, and she loves and excepts her as her grand daughter, as i do my daughter. my mom is just scared for me, which i can underdsatnd. but i have done things right for years when it comes to food, and not over doing it. i have gotten alot better. i had skin cancer and it was sucking alot of life from me, i feel so much different since thats been gone, it was holding me back from living better. not letting my body focus on what it needed to.
thanks for giving me advice, i havent been able to talk to any women that have had hypo before having children. only seen things with women that have gotten while pregnant.. thanks,,

The most important thing for you and your baby is your diet. Make sure you stay away from sugar, processed junk food, alcohol, and nicotine. Get some healthy carbohydrates in you and eat a balanced diet.

Have you seen your doctor yet? Start taking a good pregnancy vitamin pill now, it'll make sure you have enough of the vitamins and minerals that you and your baby needs.

Make sure you communicate with your doctor/nurse. If there's any concerns they can guide you through, or reassure you that there are none Smile

ya i dont eat any of that, and dont drink, nor smoke, cigs, they are nasty, any the natural carbs i have are from, veggies, and nuts, i never eat anything out side of what i can eat. i was taking vitamins, that are a multi-vit, with minerals, but i havent taken last couple days, going to go to the doc's to see which one's i should take. it's nice to talk to someone that is going through it, not just an outsider

Good to hear about your diet.

Try something like Pregnacare. I'm in the UK so not sure if you have it, but you will have something like it. That kind of pill contains things like folic acid which will help you Smile

Sorry to hear about that.

It's a shame people aren't being more supportive. Without knowing the situation I can't comment but I think it's safe to say that people should support you, regardless of the situation.

Yes speak to your doctor. Explain that you're trying for a baby and he'll be able to advise you. I don't know about over there but in the UK it's something that's taken quite seriously and people get a lot of help.

I hope things work out good for you!

How did it go? I'm very curious because I'm hypoglycemic and just realized I am pregnant for the second time.

I would like to counter some of the information put on here about pregnancy and hypoglycemia though. I think it's very concerning. I have been hypoglycemic since childhood though did not know it until towards the end of my first pregnancy. Before that, I had naturally had it under control after I'd gotten a little into nutrition and started eating healthy. Looking back now it's so obvious, hypoglycemia explains EVERYTHING. But the reason I didn't know about it was because although my symptoms dominated my life, I didn't have severe and quick reactions to food that I DID BEGIN TO HAVE AFTER GIVING BIRTH and later taking part in a half marathon (which, by the way, was a lot like a grueling labor.)

I was much worse after my birth, and much, MUCH worse after my half marathon. Now I'm VERY sensitive and have been struggling to keep my blood-sugar reactions stable for a year and a half. I'm absolutely terrified of having a second baby. My first pregnancy robbed me of any chance at normalcy in my life, and if that can happen from one, what will another do?

Most of the reading I do suggests that the babies will be fine and not to worry. I am so sick of that kind of advice. The well-being of the mother is very important too. Some of the moms become unstable people (and miserable parents) thanks to aggravated hypoglycemia.

I hope you are doing ok and that your hypoglycemia hasn't gotten worse. For me I am just beginning a search for resources on hypoglycemia and pregnancy and I am lost for anything worthwhile. If anyone can recommend anything I would be so grateful. I don't even know which doctors to turn to since there are still so many out there that either deny the existence of hypoglycemia or tell their patients to eat candy when they crash.

Also, it's kind of late for you now, but for other people reading this, I would be a little careful about adding grains back into your diet, especially while pregnant and your body is in a more taxed state. There's lots of information out there on why grains are no good in general, but for hypos? I got into a huge argument with a nutritionist (who by the way had never seen a hypoglycemic before) who insisted that I needed to eat grains so that I could get enough carbs. She couldn't comprehend what I was telling her: every time I have anything containing grains I get a hypoglycemic response! I ate some whole-grain pasta once and fell into a deep sleep within half an hour... I didn't wake up for hours! In my quest for grain replacements, I made bread from 100% flax, eggs, and baking soda. I had an unmissable crash within a couple of hours.

I guess if anything, you could try sprouted grains. I hear they are supposed to be better so I just started experimenting with them because a 100% meat/egg/veggie diet is pricey, especially if you try to go organic.

Good luck to all hypo mamas out there. I'm here to tell the rest of you... it's really @*^%#^ hard!

It's funny someone replied to this, I found yesterday I'm pregnant.

There's not going to be a lot of information on this subject, and any that's around is going to be sketchy and not necessarily reliable. As we all know, 'reactive' hypoglycemia isn't widely accepted.

If you get problems I'd say speak to your midwife first. Some women do get hypoglycemia during pregnancy without any previous history, as with diabetes.

As far as my hypoglycemia is concerned, I'm actually doing perfectly fine eating a range of carbohydrate, certainly better than if I go 'low carb'. As long as I stay away from sugar on an empty stomach, I don't get a reaction.

You need carbohydrate for the baby, so find some complex carbs that you can tolerate without reactions.

It's been 14 years since my last pregnancy, I have two wonderful kids ages 14 and 16. I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia at 17 and went though a bout during my late 20 that put me out of work for a month and a half. I had very few problems keeping my sugar levels up during pregnancy but I did end up with gestational diabetes during both pregnancies. Make sure your OB or Midwife keep a good check on your sugar levels. They normally start checking for gd around 28 weeks. Both times my sugar levels started going up around 15 to 17 weeks and I had to take insulin with while carrying my daughter. As to the carb question, there are many complex carbs that are not grain based. Here is a link for the glycemic index
http://www.glycemicindex.com/. Hopefully it will help you find good carbs that will work for you. Good luck with your new addition to the family.

My pregnancy has turned out to be TWINS!

I'm not having any more trouble with my blood sugar, if anything it's more stable than ever, but it's early days. My diet is all over the place with nausea and eating 'what I should' is impossible! I eat whatever doesn't smell like gone off brocolli at the time.
