My 8 m old is under treatment for Hyperinsulinimic hypoglycemia with diazoxide since birth. When i took a second opinion the doctor says T3/4 TSH levels for my 8m old are high although they are within the lab mentioned normal range? are the paediatric reference range different to the normal?
T3 at 179.3 lab normal (60-200) ng/dL vs 8m old level 82.08
T4 at 9.69 lab normal (4.5 - 12.0) µg/dL vs 8m old level 4.645
TSH at 1.43 lab normal (0.30 - 5.5) µIU/mL vs 8m old level 0.398

Based on the above he feels that the baby has to be treated for hyperthyroid. Is this an appropriate conclusion. And could this be the reason for the hyperinsulin levels?

I have tried researching through the internet for any such research but unable to bounce on anything. Any reference website would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
It must be hard to go through this. You definitely have to get a second opinion. And most importantly, test for Free T4 and Free T3, and not for Total T4 and Total T3 (these tests are almost never used any more). Your baby's levels seem to be on the high end, but then again babies need more hormones than adults. Also everyone is different, those levels might be just right for your child. The TSH is perfect. Get Free T4, Free T3 tested, get a thyroid ultrasound, CT scan or imaging and get a second opinion! Also, what are the symptoms? How was high insulin discovered? Would be good to do a CT scan of abdomen as well.

Best of luck.

Oh, and another thing. Hyperthyroidism could definitely cause hypoglycemia. Only I think you need more testing done before initiating a treatment.

low blood sugar
I have found all this very interesting. I am having problems with sugar drop even when eating and drinking. only once in a while will it ever come up but quickly drops down again. I feel awful. Shaky, heart racing, feel faint, tired no energy. headache. skin around nose and inside ears very dry, never hardly have to urinate. I am tring so hard to figure the problem. It seems as though you have to make a diagnosis before going to the doctor as they have no clue what to do. Gave me xanax, I dont take as I want to know how I am really feeling. Mother has diabeties but my son is hypo. I do not have a clue what I am. going crazy! Now wondering if thyroid is involved from what you are saying. I feel so bad for your child and you. It has got to be tough. There is no way anyone who has never experianced this could really understand just how bad it makes you feel. I hope you get him better soon!
