There are many who are on PPIs for life. The general advice is they are safe but many of us have experienced the side effects. Though what is worse, the side effects or what damage may be done from excess acid?
You can do many things for yourself. Keep a food diary to find your particular trigger foods to avoid.
Follow the lifestyle advice: lose weight (if you need to), avoid tight clothing, avoid exercise that cramps the stomach after eating, eat small portions (little and often), don't eat (or drink) for three hours before going to bed.
Not so effective as PPIs but with fewer side effects, you could try ranitidine (Zantac)?
But if you do experience persistent heartburn, you should have an endoscopy at least every couple of years to ensure it hasn't become Barrett's (which in a few cases can lead to cancer).
