I am a 51 year old nurse returning to school and continuing to work 3, 12 hour shifts per week. I recently quit smoking after 25 years (10 days free now). I was diagnosised with HTN at age 27 after the birth of my 3rd child. For the 3 pregnancies, the only other problem I had was UTI. No preeclmpsia, no PIHTN, normal BP's during check ups and deliveries.
By now, I have been on at LEAST 20 different BP meds, and now take Verapamil, Avelide, Tekturna, and Metoprolol. My potassium levels have been 2.8-3.2, and so just started on potassium daily. Echo, Stress test have been negative. In 2001 had an MRI of the kidneys that showed "mild strictures going in and out of kidneys".
Should I push for more studies on my kideys?
I am overwieght now, but was not when diagnosed.

The most common cause for secondary hypertension (hypertension due to underlying condition) is renal (kidney's) artery stenosis (blood vessel narrowing).
For this type of hypertension is characteristic to occur before age 30 years (especially without a family history) and to be accelerated or in form of resistant hypertension.

Check your kidneys function and structure, liver and endocrine glands, too.Your low potassium levels can be due to kidney loss in some kidney condition, or because of using diuretics (water pills) to decrease the high blood pressure.
Potassium supplements have mild effect on lowering the high blood pressure.

Best wishes!
