Hi,

I recently performed Oral sex on my girlfried, At the time I had a small blister on my lip. A few days later she received all the symptoms of genital herpes. I have never had any symptoms of genital herpes, but in the past have had small blisters on my lip (generally when I've been exposed to harsh environments or been stressed) I assume I have cold sores.

My question is it more likely that she has contracted the HSV 1 virus, given that I had a cold sore whilst performing oral sex? Could I have bothe HSV 1 and 2 and what would be more likely to transmit when I gave her oral sex. We also had unprotected sex. She has never had cold sores or this before.

I'm a bit confused as to what type she has. I know a test will highlight, but before that wanted to get an opinion.

How common is HSV 1 in the genitals?

Many thanks

There are different types of the herpes virus. There are cold sores, genital herpes, shingles, chicken pox... It is possible to transmit herpes from one person's cold sore to another person's genitals through oral sex and vice versa. The two are both spread through skin to skin contact.
For more information, you can read this article at the National Institute of Health website.

Cold sores are caused by HSV 1 so you transmitted herpes simplex 1 to her in her genital area; she now has herpes simplex 1 of the genitals. I still don't fully understand the HS viruses. I don't know what the difference is between HSV 1 of the genitals and HSV 2. I believe that HSV 1 can cause cold sores or genital herpes while HSV can only cause genital herpes. I don't know if they are treated differently or if the name simply refers to the region of the outbreak and HSV 1 of the genitals and HSV 2 are different names for the same thing. My understanding is that they are the same thing but the name simply indicates which virus caused the outbreak; either way it is genital herpes.
