after i had my son i went and got my 6 week check up done. i got it done late because of personal issues. anyways when my results came back they said i had abnormal cervical changes and is likely caused from HPV. they want me to come in for a coloscopy (sp?). im scared about it and have been putting it off. can anyone please tell me in great detail exactly what that is and the steps to it, the amount of time it takes etc? also what is, & how do you get HPV?

Re: HPV diagnosis and treatment
Dear newmommy,

Excuse me in advance for my bad English, I am a foreigner but I will try to explain you as simple as possible since I am not aware of the medical terms in English.

As you know the HPV is a sexually transmitted vyrus and lots of sexually active women carry it. Do not get me wrong, it is not a sexually transmitted desease such as syphilis for example, it is just a vyrus and recently the scientists discovered that the cancer of the uterus is caused exactly by HPV.

The colposcopy is a test by which your doctor will smear the upper part of your uterus with a special preparation. If the HPV has injured your uterus this preparation will make the injured area to turn to a different color. After smearing the doctor will observe with a microscope. It is not painful at all so there is nothing to worry about. The feeling is like taking sample from the vaginal secretion and takes no more than 10 minutes.

If there`s no any injury probably your doctor will perscribe you an antibiotic to kill the HPV. If there is an injured area the doctor have to "burn" it with another preparation in order to stop the vyrus from penetrating ahead. It is not painful too.

Do not put off your colposcopy, I have been through it, I was also scared, especially after reading in Wikipedia that the colposcopy is a very painful test and didn`t believe the contary when asking my doctor. I had also HPV, as long as I remember in stage 1. After the coposcopy my doctor perscribed me an antibiotic and the second test after a month was negative.

I spoke to my GYN about the HPV since it is a relatively new founed condition. She explained me that the science still does not know how did it appear, it is transmitted sexually and leads to an uterus cancer ONLY if not treated in time. She also told me that there is a statistic prooving that a big percentage of the women (obviously men too) carry it, but according her the percentage is even bigger, sth like 90%. There is a vaccine against it but unfortunately it is not good for us, only for young girls before having their first sexual contact.

I wish you the best of luck and assure you that there`s nothing to be afraid of!

there is no antibiotic that can be prescribed to get rid of the hpv...hpv is human papilloma virus..viruses cannot be cured by antibiotics...the colonoscopy just gives the doctor a closer look at the "problem" area..if there is reason for concern then they may choose to go further than the colonoscopy(maybe a biopsy)...dont panic yet, I had the same problem..the colonoscopy doesn't hurt at all..after the colonoscopy they wanted to see me again for a 6 month check up in which they told me I was completely fine....if it is HPV, there is no cure(since it is a virus) but I was told in minor cases your body can correct itself(though the virus will still remain present it may not be "active" in your body)...hpv is only linked to cervical cancer/warts in SOME strands..so it isn't guranteed that the strand you contracted will lead to these things, just be healthy and hopefully your body will correct itself! (though the virus will always be present it may stay suppressed) also, the vaccine is not only good for younger women who are not yet sexually active, but it is also encouraged for any woman that is sexually active, men are not affected by hpv but MANY are carriers, obviously the more partners the man has had the more chances he had to get infected and thus pass it along to you....best of luck to you and try not too worry too much!!! (this coming from one whos name is "worrywart" Smile haha )

For the first time in my life I hear that antibiotics are not good for viruses and there`s no cure for them since we`re perscribed antibiotics for every prolonged flu caused by respiratory virus. However I am not a doctor and the antibiotic could kill the consequence but not the virus itself. Still more now that I remember along with the antibiotic my doctor gave me a syrup for strenghtening the immune system. I am wondering also how a vaccine could help a sexually active woman who already carries the HPV. Before each vaccine doctors require the patient to be absolutely healthy because the vaccine prevents but does not cure an already existing illness.

However I came back to this post not to go ahead in a "dispute" but to add sth I forgot before. This is a product that I bought - the Carrageenan gel. It is a 100% natural remedy made by algae. The scientists have proven that some of the ingredients are capable of killing the HPV. It could be used as a lubricant during sexual intercourse or you could add several drops when having bath. In my country it is sold in the pharmacies and I think it is worth trying as an attending therapy.

okay ty for the messages but... if i do have hpv does that mean ive contracted it thru my b/f of ten years? ive suspected him of cheating a few times since 6/10 years we been together. i had no proff but w/e my intuition stands. i only think a few times he cheated but w/e. anyways i did actually sleep with another man 5 years ago but only once when we broke up. so... is it highly possible that if i do have hpv... he gave it to me? my b/f of 10 years that is.

Do not think about that, you can not say for sure who gave it to you, nither you can be sure if the one-night is a carrier at the moment. It is not a reason of blaming your boy friend of cheating since the one who gave it to you might be your high school boy friend as well or sbd that you have slept with 15 years ago and have forgotten about long time ago. As I wrote before the HPV is a relatively new founed virus and you do not have to think of it as a venereal disease. I told my husband my test was positive and what further tests I have to do and we didn`t discuss at all who gave it to me. Probably you should do the same. The HPV doesn`t affect men reproductive system so the most importnat now is to do your colposcopy and I am sure everything will be fine. Good luck and stop worrying!

It doesn't "cure" women who already have hpv...in your previous post however you stated that older women didn't need the vaccine, if the woman has not yet contracted hpv and is sexually active..then it will benefit her to get the vaccine..also, since there isn't just one strand of hpv, even women diagnosed with hpv can benefit from this if they don't have one of the 4(i believe) strands it protects you from and these strands have been believed to be strands that lead to cervical cancer and genital warts...once again..hpv cannot be killed..trust me after 5 months in a microbiology class i should know this by now...viruses cannot be killed...there are antibiotics and medicines that may help treat the symptoms..however, the virus remains in your body..active or not..its still there and may reemerge years later

if he had other partners before you its very well possible that he contracted the virus and became a carrier and passed it along..or it could have been the guy you were with 5 years ago if he was sexually active...theres really no way of knowing...the more partners obviously the better chance you have of getting the virus

I have red sth that sounds staggering to me. Could you please have a look and share what do you think about this horrible home treatement. Thanks
