The sexually acquired "Human papilloma virus", or HPV, found in cervical cells is a condition that turns normal cells into precancerous ones. Depending on the strength of the immune system, cancer may develop (pretty quickly, if the body's immunity does not work properly, but this will depend on a case-by-case basis). The process goes: normal cervix cells HPV = precancerous cells insufficient work of immune system = cancerous cells. It takes more time for the development of a precancerous process than the time is takes for the precancerous cells to become cancerous.
