Lithotripsy is the only medical non-surgical procedure that can break kidney stones into smaller one. Once they reach the size of about 4mm, there are 80% chances that they will leave the kidneys on their own. However, this can depend on many other factors and can still be painful. Taking a lot of water in order to try to flush the kidney stone is the only non-surgical treatment for completely eliminating the kidney stones. Pain relievers might be recommended to decrease the pain.
