Q: How to lose love handles ?
asked by: mle on September 19th, 2008

I am 18. Female. About 5'2 in height and weigh about 140. I am muscular in my legs and shoulders in stuff but I have unwanted pounds on my thighs and sides. I would be alot happier with myself if I lost those pounds and really slimed down or at least become more defined.
If anyone could let me know how to do this let me know!!! thanks

Extremely eHealthy
are you doing cardio? do the eliptical 30 minutes for at least 5 days a week or treadmill, whatever you prefer...i think really the only way to loose the love handles is to loose weight, incorporate some weight lifting into your work outs though as well so that you get more toned and you should see results...for the weights to be effective you should be able to do a set of 8 if you can its too heavy, but you shouldn't be able to do more than 12 in one set or the weight is too light..do 3 sets of 8-12 and move on to the next excercise...just stay in the gym and as you see the lbs drop you should see yourself toning up and the love handles will start to go away

Running, walking, biking... You can also purchase 10 lb hand weights and use them for mini workouts in your living room. Weights and toning can be done in one spot pretty easily. With the right exercises, you probably wouldn't even NEED the weights.

You can also make some (minor) changes in your diet to help bring on the weightloss-- that route doesn't really involve a gym, but works best when paired with exercise.

Well, not sure what else to suggest in terms of working out. It is needed to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Where there's a will, there's a way. Wink

Pop is a problem. It's got lots of sugar, the caffiene makes it harder to lose weight, and a lot of calories. Try to make a switch to water, its a more healthy choice.

I read some of your other posts and it sounds like you need to make a few lifestyle changes if you want to lose the extra fat in the middle. I used to run track in high school(~8 years ago) so I have sort of the same affliction of muscular legs and arms but my middle area is beginning to creep out over my jeans. In college I had a gym across the street that was owned by the university so I could work out there for free(or at least it was already included in tuition). It seems to me that you have neither the time nor the access to such a facility or for any fitness activity. Losing weight takes a LOT of effort, despite what some magazines or commercials may say. You can't expect your body to respond if you don't put in the effort required. Drinking soda and working out once a week is counterproductive to your goal. And to make matters even a little more difficult, you can't spot-shrink fat. Soooo what I suggest is that you enlist members of your family or your boyfriend to walk or jog with you, especially if the area you live in is not safe. Is there a park nearby where you can do some cardio safely? I just recently joined a new gym that opened up so I got a HUGE discount on membership, if your town is getting a new gym I suggest you check that out if you can spend the money. Getting fitness into your daily routine is going to be tough as nails, trust me. I'm sure you can remember times when you deeply did NOT want to do something but you did anyway out of obligation. This is how you need to treat taking time to workout until you make it a habit( OR you find an enjoyable activity, I've heard spinning classes are very successful and can be entertaining, also coed sports teams or racquetball). Don't just workout when you "feel like it." Write it into your schedule, organize your life AROUND fitness. You probably have more time in your day than you think.
Really try to cut back on the soda if you can. I know that's going to be difficult but it's essential if you want to reach your goal "quicker." Soda provides a lot of calories and the carbonation actually leaches phosphorous(an essential mineral for bone health) from your bones. If you absolutely MUST have soda try switching to a low-calorie or Zero calorie(like Pepsi One), it'll be less detrimental to your health.
The quicker you would like to see results, the more stringent with your diet and exercise you will have to be(which is hella difficult so I suggest taking it slowly, just starting a fitness regimen is great whether or not you cut out the soda at the same time). Don't be discouraged if you don't see results quickly. Whatever you don't see in yourself is happening 2-fold in your body. Fitness is great for cardiovascular health, mental health, gastrointestinal health....let's just say it's awesome.

You said above that you live in a trailer, so I'll just recommend what can be done with minimal equipment.

Thighs-Biking will take off a lot of fat on the thighs, but go for long/moderate-difficulty biking (like biking on relatively flat ground) as opposed to short bursts of hard biking (like biking uphills) to make sure your legs burn fat as oposed to building tons of bulky fast-twitch muscles

Abs-Bicycle situps are very, very effective. Unlike most ab exercises, the twisting motion of the bicycle situp helps you work the entire torso, including your sides. It is also one of the safest ab exercises as ur chances of injuring your lower back or recruiting your hip flexors is rare

Knock of drinking cola/soda. The most you should be drinking of that stuff is one bottle a week. If you are drinking soda, there is a good chance your basic diet is bad as well. Also, go far a jog, one half hour 4 to 5 times a week. One half hour does not require much of your time. Get up, or go to bed, a half hour earlier or later.

Otherwise there is not much people can do for you here.

soda is not a good idea
each can of pop contains about 7 or more spoonfuls of sugar. that much sugar is something that you would not eat out of the sugar container in the house right? thats a LOT of sugar. so cutting that out is key, and remember i said each can contains that much sugar. like another user above 'sooner' said if you must drink it, switch to a zero calorie drink like diet coke or diet pepsi. one other thing that sooner said that i liked was that fitness has to be arranged as a priority in your life for it to take effect.

now, having said that, my background to the topic is that i lost weight recently in my life. starting in may i began exercising and watching what i ate and i roughly lost 20 pounds so far. now, that is a time frame of 5 months, so 20 / 5 = 4 pounds lost per month. now that doesnt seem like a lot but it was sustained weight loss, i wasnt losing and then gaining it back. how did i do it? well, first lets talk about exercise:

i lost weight by running outside mostly. i would run for like 30 minutes almost every day. now, there is a technique to the running, most people think that you should run as hard as you can for as long as you can. thats not how that works. you should run at a comfortable pace, meaning without getting out of breath and without feeling muscle cramps in your legs. you should run for a few minutes then you walk for a few minutes. its called a run / walk pattern. but you should never feel like you are struggling to breathe, that means you are over doing the running part of it. as time goes on, you will increase the running time and decrease the walking time. so i started out with a 4 / 3 , 4 minutes light jogging and 3 minutes walking and i went up to a 6 / 3; 6 minutes jogging and 3 minutes walking. there are books on this topic, the best book is called 'Book on Running' by Galloway. check it out at your local library if you can. i know that not everyone can run, maybe the location around is not safe or other issues exist. but thats how i lost the weight, if its not safe to run for you in local parks then i would recommend some of the indoor exercises that the other users above have suggested. next i focused on diet:

i just ate smaller meals more often and tried to keep them healthy: boiled eggs, apples, vegetables, little bit of rice and carrots with yogurt, more home cooked and less fast food. i would eat like 5 times a day but small amounts. you should always feel a little bit hungry every time you finish eating. dont ever fill up completely. another key thing is that you should eat bigger meals in the morning and afternoon and little for dinner. you should eat dinner so that you are not starving at night time but it should not be the biggest meal of the day. that is simply because you are not going to use up that energy and when you go to sleep that energy is converted to fat.

the combination of the two along with regular stretching, yoga type exercises are good for weight loss. for me, the weight loss took time and i am still going at it. so dont expect things to happen very quickly but you can do it if you keep at it. if nothing else, i would control the diet. if you cannot exercise outside for some reason, strictly control your diet. cut out sugary drinks and eat healthier things like carrots and apples for snacks and fruits for lunch. for your main meals, cut the size by a third. that alone will give you results. hope this helps.

don't give up
Hey there
The most important thing about losing weight is to stay motivated and not get discouraged. It's very important to eat properly, exercise regularly (even walking) and get enough rest. Without doing those tings you will never lose weight. If you are really committed to eating well and exercising you can give yourself a weight lose boost by taking a diet pill that is right for you. You need to eat right and exercise too.

Good luck
