How much damage has smoking done to my body?

I am 31 and have been smoking since I was 15. I smoke about 1 1/2packs a day. I was just wondering if my body can heal from the damage I've done to it. I really want to quit, but just thinking about it stresses me out and I smoke more. I am so scared I have done damage that can't be reversed. I refuse to get an xray of my lungs because I'm scared of what I will find Has anyone had significant healing after they have quit smoking? Is it already to late?

Hi carebear,
Damage has been done and can't recover. But you can try to restrict. First don't think anything regarding smoking. X-ray is only to know the status of lung's. Once you know the lungs status then you can evaluate the situation.

It is easy to quit
Hi Carebear, I'm sad to hear the above two comments that damage can't be recovered! Our bodies are an incredible machine and can heal ourselves incredibly. I started smoking when i was 15, smoked 20 a day, and quit 4 months ago, I am now 37.

Everyday now i can feel my lungs healing and what's more is, you know you feel that need to smoke, after a few months, your lungs feel so good, it's as good as smoking a cigarette everytime you breathe!

Not only that, the black rings under my eyes are gone, my skin is plumper, it's colour is not grey anymore, mentally i feel much stronger, my heart feels like it is pumping normally now.

Everything heals after you quit smoking - it is never too late, and just wait till you realise how amazing you feel once you have quit, you really will wonder why you thought it was so hard to quit!
