After researching the symptoms over and over, I feel I may have bipolar disorder. I've read plenty of forums regarding where to go if one has symptoms. 100% of them advise that I consult my doctor. My question is how do I go about this conversation with my doctor? Would he just refer me to a mental health specialist? One of the main things that is holding me back from seeing my doctor about it (I hope to not offend) is embarrassment. If I were, in fact, diagnosed I would want to keep it secret from pretty much everyone.

Hello,

Welcome to ehealthforum

First of all do not hesistate to visit a Physician for your symptoms. After seeing him you need not tell your diagnosis but explain the symptoms only and then he will decide accordingly. If there is a need to refer to a Psychiatrist he would and you should not be embarrased about it.It is just like any other disease and can be very well controlled with medications. If you do not want to discuss with anyone it is absolutely fine and do not be afraid your Healthcare Provider even would not share this with anyone as they are liable to.
Be confident and consider visiting a Physician soon so that if required appropriate treatment can be started.

Take Care!
