General Q and A Answer A5329
A physician or an operator inserts a speculum into the patient’s vagina, collecting a cell sample from the cervix and the cervical canal. The pain can vary from none to severe (especially in women with cervical stenosis). In most cases, there is only a mild discomfort. A Pap smear is taken to obtain cells in order to examine them and recognize any abnormal cells, including malignant cells.
