Q: Hormone Imbalance at 16

So I just went to a doctor with my dad about my acne because I've had it for a while now and it's become really bad. We just figured that I would be prescribed another kind of medicine as usual. But the doctor said that I could have a hormonal imbalance where I have an excess of androgens, which are male hormones and I am a female. He basically came to this conclusion by looking at my face and saying that I do have some hair growth on the sides and that my arms are hairier that normal and because my hair falls out easily. I'm really scared now because then he went on to say that I would need a blood test and he would have to put me on birth control if it came out positive. But I think that my parents are in denial or something because my dad's a pharmacist and knows what all the drugs can do to you and this is the first doctor who has said something like this. Basically my dad said the doctor didn't know what he was talking about and that we wouldn't be going back to him. Now I'm really nervous and scared and I've been researching about hormonal imbalances online ever since I got home from the doctor's office.

So my question is could I have a hormone imbalance and if I do what's happening to my body that's different and are there any major side effects?

Yes, a hormone imbalance will make your face break out and also make you hairier or thin out your hair. Your father probably doesn't want you on birth control, because then that would make it easier for you to have sex without anyone knowing.

If you do have a hormone imbalance, you need to have it checked, just in case. It's a simple blood test. If you are concerned about this, talk to your parents about it. Assure him that you wouldn't do anything because of the pills (and keep your promise!). You would be taking them for a medical reason, not to have sex.

If they would feel more comfortable, get a second opinion from a dermatologist. Since your acne is getting worse, something should be done before you start to get a lot of scaring (like I have). It may not be a hormone imbalance, but it's worth checking out anyway. If that isn't what's causing it, there are other medications that you can try.

There is a product called Differin that worked great for me. But you need a perscription to get it, or off the internet, and it is strong.

there is a herbal remedy that helped clear up my skin. it's called natures choice, you can search for it on drugstore.com
it tells you why people gets acme and how they can help you clear it up. it doesnt cost much $10 or more.
i always had acme and the dermantoligist gave me rentinA which dried my skin up so bad i couldnt even open up my mouth.
so i didnt think a herbal remedy would help but it did. you can also buy it a some CVS and walgreens stores over the counter. but you have to search the website so they can tell you which ones sell it.
it's herbs so your dad shouldnt be too concerned about it.
explain to him how having acne makes you feel bad and your anxious to clearing it up.
another suggestion is have you ever tried over the counter items that has salicylic acid (acne treatment) and benzoyl peroxide. these comes in the oxy pads and the cream.
