Q: Hormonal effects of birth control pills
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 4th, 2009
Girlfriend- 16 years of age, recent sexual activity, no alcohol or drugs except birth control Yasmin-recently started.

Hi, my girlfriend is having irregular periods lately-likely due to the birth control Yasmin she has just started. She chose the Day 1 start which I was informed that it would cause period irregularities. In any case, her period had just ended (a 7 day period rather than the normal 4 day she was used to) and 2 days later which is today, she started to bleed from her vagina. It was supposedly as much as much blood as a regular period, but she said the blood was apparently "lighter" than a usual period. What possible causes would this be? What procedures should she take for precautions? Thank you.

According to the data you reported, the light bleeding might be related to the hormonal effect of the birth control pill. The additional bleeding might be the last parts of the inner lining detaching, and thus ending the period for real.

You might want to wait for several more days and it is possible that the bleeding might stop. Otherwise, your girlfriend might visit her gynecologist for additional examinations and tests.
