Q: HIV post exposure prophylaxis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 29th, 2008
Hi

I went to thailand last week and got to know a thai girl from a massage parlour. We went clubbing and one thing led to another and i found myself having unprotected sex thrice with her. My guess is i am not the first one to have sex with her as thailand is notorious for such activities. I would like to know what are the necessary steps i should take in getting a diagnosis and treatments before it manifests into the killer virus. Please help
Thank you.

HIV post exposure prophylaxis includes antiretroviral medications which should be given as soon as possible. The time when the medications are given should not exceed three days after intercourse. There are no known methods for HIV post exposure prophylaxis after seven days. To diagnose HIV infection, you should do HIV tests at three and six months after exposure.
