Flu like symptoms (fever, headache, muscle pain and sore joints) can develop within several weeks after infection with HIV. However, the symptoms are not characteristic and additional HIV testing after at least three weeks after exposure has to be performed to confirm or to exclude HIV infection. Tests three and six months after exposure are also recommended, in order to be sure that no infection has occurred.
