Q: historectomy vs birth controll pills

I am 45 and have uterine fibroids - I controll bleeding issues with birth controll pills and currently that works well... I am now weighing pros and cons of pill vs surgery....also problems with needing to change insurance and new company wanting to either add an expensive rider OR wait till post surgery/recovery OR exclude any future problems with firbroids....not sure what all "what ifs"to consider. I have talked to my doc and she agrees I could go either way, that I need to choose best for me...I need help as I keep reading good and bad about both options....UG

Hysterectomy is MAJOR abdominal surgery. It takes 6 weeks to recovery from the surgery and there are many considerations - such as physical and sexual problems women can have after hysterectomy. Also bladder issues and would you keep your ovaries or have them removed as well. I hope your doctor has told you that when you reach menopause, it is likely your fibroids will go away - which, considering your age, could be very soon.

If birth control pills are working, it might be something to think about continuing.

I am leaning towards the pill, however what about the pills potential lowering of libido...and links to other health issues espically at 45....I am a non smoker always have been, I am average weight and moderately active?

Has your doctor discussed any other treatment for your fibroids other than birth control pills or hysterectomy? Is this a gynecologist or a family doctor?
