Q: Hiring mom as home health nurse ?

Hi everyone,

I am about to have brain surgery and was told by my doctor that I may need 24 hour assistance. My insurance company covers any home health care visits (60 total). My mother is an RN and works for a company in a different state than me. I was thinking about going and staying with my parents while I heal but I was wondering if it is illegal to hire my mother through the agency. The agency is in network with my insurance (BC/BS PPO) even though it's in a different state. It's a group insurance plan through my husband's work. I don't want to do anything illegal but I don't see how it would be a problem. She works for a home health care company and she has been an RN for 20 years. I trust her. Does anyone know the rules on something like that?

Thanks!

Call your insurance company and ask about it, since they are the ones who will be paying or not based on their assessment. She is a professional, so it should be fine. It would only be illegal if you were being fraudulent about it, but you aren't, so calling Blue Shield is just a precaution. I don't think anyone will blame you for wanting your mom to take care of you, especially since she is a nurse.

Good luck with your surgery. I hope everything goes well.
