I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer with mets to my lungs, My oncologist told me that the treatments that I am on is making my lungs "liquidfy" which is a good thing in order to shrink the rumors, anyways, for the past few days my back at the top right almost at the bone there has been hurting so much, It feels like I pulled a muscle, but no drugs, heat rubs anything is working, I am also having shortness of breathe with this backache and on Tuesday I am going on a trip where lots of walking will be involved and I am worried that the ache will not clear up, any suggestions? I am presently also taking "Symbicord" for shortness of breathe but even that is not working. thank you, Janice in Ontario Canada

Have you discussed this with your oncologist? His thoughts about you going on a trip lots of walking...my goodness your kidney cancer has spread to your lungs.

My mothers cancer has spread to her lungs and she gets winded walking across the room.

The symptoms that you are describing are consistent with lung cancer. Doubtful that your ache will clear up by then...if it does it will more than likely appaer when you least expect it to do so.

How long did it take you to be seen in order to be dx'd with kidney cancer and from there how long was it before you discovered that it spread to your lungs? Have or are you taking chemo / rad?

Did your oncologist provide you with a prognosis?

Hello, thanks for the reply. I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer by accident, I had actually pulled a muscle in my left shoulder and went to the hospital, they were just about to release me when a nurse who was attending noticed that I have a Scottish accent, when she asked if I was on an airplane recently I told her yes, that I had just returned from a trip "back home" she informed the emergency room doctor who was going to give me muscle relaxants and send me home that I just returned from Scotland so the doctor re-evaluated and decided to check me for a possible blood clot from the airplane, when all the tests came back that is when the diagnosis of Kidney Cancer came from, I was totally floored, unexpected, overwhelmed, so many emotions, I went for further tests that afternoon and it was determined that I had mets to my lungs, very small, they feel early detected, so I have now had my kidney removed, I have done 12 weeks of a trial drug called Torisel before my kidney was removed, and now I am having another 12 weeks since my kidney was removed, I am now on my 5th treatment, I had XRays and scans done and in no way is my sore back or my shortness of breathe lung cancer, I do not have lung cancer, I have kidney cancer that has spread to the lungs, two completely different organs, my lungs from the treatments are turning to liquid, which is what happens with this drug before they clear up, which I pray will happen ASAP, but for now I am just trying to deal with everything on a "One Day at a Time" as far as the back ache goes,, i believe it is because I am only 4 weeks post surgery from having my kidney out, but because of financial difficulties and to get in a better frame of mind, I decided to go back to work after the 3rd week of surgery, so I believe that it may have been too soon, I have a job that I am on my feet 8 hours x 6 days per week, and the day before surgery I also quit smoking, so the shortness in breathe may have something to do with that as well, I just want a doctor's opinion, my X-ray and CT scan all showed my mets are still there, and liquidified, and that may be the reason my lungs and breathing feels heavy, I will talk to my oncologist tomorrow, but until then I was just hoping for another doctor's opinion, thank you, Janice, Ont. Canada

janicecoker09,

I am sorry that you are going through this but you said in your initial post that it had 'mets' to your lungs.

This means that cancer that was in your kidney has traveled to another location. You are correct is it not considered lung cancer. It should be categorized as lung cancer 2ndary to kidney. Now if the treatment that you have been taking has removed the cancer from your lungs...great news.

You also said that your x-ray and CT scan all showed my mets are still there.

Metastasis:

Pathology. Transmission of pathogenic microorganisms or cancerous cells from an original site to one or more sites elsewhere in the body, usually by way of the blood vessels or lymphatics.

A secondary cancerous growth formed by transmission of cancerous cells from a primary growth located elsewhere in the body.

I am not a doctor however I do have experience with individuals who have / had cancer...primary or 2ndary. My mothers cancer started in her reproductive organ and has now spread to her lungs.

There is an Ask a Doctor button in our forums. You may want to repost your question there for a doctors response.

Best Wishes,

Zig
