I think high normal in a wbc is 10,000 or 13,000. rbc actually I have forgotton the ratio on that. Anyway, Each can fluctuate a bit either and not have to worry. When you start getting up in the 20,000 mark in wbc ratio, then there is some cause for concern. Normally meaning you body if fighting some kind of infection.

As far as I know yes. You would be only .6mm above normal if my calculations and memory are correct which is still considered within normal rage but they still (by AMA standards) have to "Flag" it. Plus, I am sure if there were anything to worry about, doc would have told you. A little personal experience also here. When I had my appendectomy and had conlications with a staph infection my wbc count went up 28,000 ! Now that is a major infection. I won't go any futher then that.

How did you find out the results? IMHO this should be fine for your pre-op. They are basically looking for pretty high out of range (flaged) results. See, the doctor gets these results long before you even know about them if they are (what we call) still within normal range. It would be very bad if he sent you to the OR with a very high white count. So that is why they have to know a few days ahead in order to pre-plan. Your pre-op may or may not include and EKG and a pulmonary function study depending on you age and if you are a smoker or not. Any kind of lung problems, they do take extra care and you come out smelling like a rose. In the background, with the blood they have collected on you they also do a type and cross match for you blood type just incase you may need a unit or two. I also need a unit. But, with my back surgery this past Feb, I did not. I was minumally invasive ei.....went home the next day with steri strips, one suture and two bandaids. What are you having done if you don't mind me asking?

IMHO=In my humble opinion Wink And IMHO, e-mailing you the results without the doctor having told you how to interperate them is not cool. You should not have to ask someone what they mean and if you should worry or not. Something is drasictally wrong with this picture.

No that is NOT the way it is. Unless you are hacking into a medical mananger computer software it is not! Im sorry but, you are talking to someone that has been in healthcare for 23 year and has managed several offices. I know when I am being played with. Or am I missing something and we have a physician here testing us? If that is the case please let us know how we are doing. Yes, I appologize. But, you did hit a soft spot.
I have sent you a Private Message. Please read it!

Also, let me add. It is my experience that you will never get a lab result back in an hour unless it is a "STAT" lab and that has to be through the ER or inpatient hospital for that to happen under serious circumstances.

deleterman,

I am curious to know which institution would email medical information? This is highly irregular. I don't know of any hospital or doctor's office that sends a patient an email with lab results. Within an hour? Really! Impressive. In the ICU we are lucky to get STAT labs in less than an hour.

If what you are saying is true, I would suggest you find medical care elsewhere. Who wants there private information in cyberspace for other to find? Hackers are abundant and nothing is safe on the net.

hi , this is a new serves that my HMO started a few months ago. i had to sign up for it.and so far its been go but like you said its never been this fast.well the doctor did want it as soon as could be done .i talked to the person that sets up the surgeries to try and pin them down on a date , it been over a month and a half and still no word so i was just proding them i guess,so she told me to get over to get these test as soon as i could, i got there just in the nick of time before they closed. i still had to wait 26 mins untill they got the fax over from pre op . and i sure don't know how to hack in anything,i think that this is safe as i get a email and i have to sign in with a name and pass word. so i think that unless you have my log on name and pass word you can't get to my info.anyway i have a pre op on the 8th and the operation on the 17th if all goes well. i can't wait. again thanks , i'm sorry i didn't mean for this to be read as a joke or anything like that.i thank you for all your info that you have given me,some times you just can't talk to your doc when you want .so again thanks. deleterman.

The reason why antigone and I question thia is there are fine laws that restrict medical information to be released to even the patient without some heavy red tape to go through. Read or do a search on "HIPPA". Let's look at it this way. Not so much that you are recieving and allowed to view your records (if indeed thier is now software out there to do this) But, that other that are able to hack can easily get into some very confidencial records. Personally, whether it is true or not, I would feel extreamly uneasy having my files open for such easy access. Even if you do have a username and pass, in this day and age, it does not take a rocket scientist to get into someones computer. If you feel safe with this, then so be it. But me? No way I would sign up for something like that.
