Q: high fever and flu symptoms

I have been sick since I came home from school Thursday afternoon -- I had typical flu symptoms (stuffy nose, sore throat, chills, fever), but I have since developed these other symptoms in just the last few hours:

Terrible Headache
Blurred vision
Loss of hearing in my left ear
Fever of 105.4
Leg numbness
Strange rashes on my chest, belly, and thighs
And stiffness in my jaws and neck

These symptoms developed really fast in only a few hours since earlier today and I am not sure why. I have been in bed all day drinking lots of water and sleeping and I don't seem to be getting better.

My parents said they are calling an ambulance if I don't show signs of improvement by tomorrow morning.

I am terrified of hospitals and don't want to go. What could be wrong with me?? What can I do to get better ASAP?

A fever that high indicates that your body is fighting a major infection...either viral or bacterial. I agree that you will need immediate attention if your fever doesn't come down. You really don't want to have an infection like meningitis...which can effect your brain and is very contagious! Rest for now but seek medical attention if you need it!

Thank you for your concern. And you were right, it was an infection. I had bacterial meningitis and was rushed to the hospital later that day (the 21st of september) and almost died. I spent 12 1/2 days in the hospital. I just got released this afternoon.

My doctor said that I am lucky that my parents called an ambulance because other people don't think their illness is anything worse than a common flu so they decide to wait it out and then by the time they realize there's something seriously wrong and decide to get medical help, it's too late.

Thankfully, I did not have any limbs amputated (something common with meningoccacal meningitis), but I did partially lose my hearing in an ear.

I was unconscious for a day, spent 3 days on a ventilator and with tubes coming out from all over my body and spent 8 days in the ICU (and 12 1/2 days in the hospital total).

Worst of all, this all could have been prevented had I been vaccinated!

All of you go out and make sure you are vaccinated, and if not, GET vaccinated so you can't get meningococcal meningitis. Its horrible and potentially fatal. I am a lucky survivor and thank god I don't have any permanent damage besides my ear.

And good thing I have medical insurance.

Wow. I'm glad that you sought medical attention when you did...that is quite an ordeal. How are you recovering? Did the doctors have you quarantined in the hospital. Could people visit you? I'm so glad that you're doing better and got medical care!!!
