My husband was diagnosed with high blood pressure and I'm wondering what things we should be doing. We've cut out all salt. How much sodium should he have daily? How often should we be testing his blood pressure? When should he consider getting on medication? He's 27, a little over weight, but is working on cardio and trying to lose 50lbs. We eat VERY healthy - baked chicken, veggies and brown rice most nights. I just am worried and don't know where to start.

Life style changes are always first line of therapy for hypertension, but, if it isn't a severe case of hypertension.
If he has alarming high blood pressure, drug or combination of drugs are suggested immediately.
Walking every day is the best form of exercise for patients with high blood pressure.
He should reduce the salt intake to 5 grams daily and increase intake of food with high potassium content since it has protective and beneficial effect for hypertension (orange juice, grapefruit, bananas, chicken, broccoli)
Smoking and drinking alcohol must be avoided.
He should check his blood pressure at the same times every day, about an hour after waking up and in the evening, about an hour before bedtime.

Best wishes!

eating right and exercising is two good things. but if he has a family history of this than it's eminent that he'll have it regardless of his efforts to keep it low. if it is dangerously high i suggest he takes medication. theres herbs that will lower your blood pressure if it's slightly high. this is called a silent killer because theres no symptoms.
you should research webmd for facts about this disease.

Smoking
Being overweight
Lack of physical activity
Too much salt in the diet
Too much alcohol consumption
Stress
Older age
Family history of high blood pressure
Chronic kidney disease
Adrenal and thyroid disorders

His daily sodium intake should not exceed 2,400 mg (just over a teaspoon). Losing the extra weight is going to be key in lowering his blood pressure- really encourage him to stick to his diet and weight loss goals. While it sounds like your diet is already pretty healthy, you may want to consider the DASH diet as it was designed specifically to lower blood pressure. The National Health Institute publishes a free online guide to the DASH diet.
Your husband is pretty young, so I would not be surprised if the weight loss eliminated his high blood pressure and the need for medications. If the Drs want him on meds before he has lost the weight though, do not let them put him on beta blockers as they negatively affect the body's ability to exercise.
How well does he sleep? If he is restless and snores, he may have sleep apnea which often causes high blood pressure. In this case, a CPAP machine could totally eliminate his high blood pressure.
There are two medical devices that are also worth looking into before he goes on the meds. The Zona Plus was discovered by the Air Force, lowers BP 20 points on average and actually changes your body's physiology. It is a small handheld isometric therapy device. The other option, Resperate, is a guided breathing machine that focuses on relaxation and lowers blood pressure an average of 14 points. Both devices are from good companies, have loyal followings and only take a few minutes a day. The Zona has a 60 day money back guarantee and Resperate has a 30.
Good luck!
