Hey, I'm a healthy 21 year old male and have never had high blood pressure before, but I had my physical exam today and the nurse measured my blood pressure 3 times and the doctor once, and all the results showed a high blood pressure.

Doctor assumed I was a bit nervous, but I tried to tell her that I'm not feeling nervous at all but did not have much sleep and just got done with an exam (I go to college). I also take Adderall xr 30 mg for ADHD and I'm a smoker.

I'm also feeling extremely exhausted, which is expected having slept 3 hours, but my lower back is aching and got a weird feeling (like insects moving under my skin) in the area below my heart almost on the lower end of my rib cage, and I often find myself taking deep breaths and holding it in just to stop that feeling.

Should I be concerned? Whats the issue? Please advise.

Hi blackrobe and welcome to ehealth: Anytime you show high BP you should be concerned...However, you could have been nervous...Stress can work on you and make it go higher...If you are really concerned about it get your own BP monitor from a drugstore and monitor yourself...I know for a fact of life that mine goes up once I see the Internal Medicine doctor...All others I am fine with, but for some reason I freak out in that office...This was my reason for getting the machine...I talked to my Pharmacist about this and she told me my problem...This she said is a problem of many people...She said I have "white coat syndrome"...This happens when you go into an office and it authomatically raises...You know it will be high so you make it high...And believe me I raise mine about 15 points...With me this has been solved...Both the machine and seeing a nurse for a reading at an auxillary office...

Give yourself some time...If you do get a high reading have it taken care of...However, Adderall will raise it and smoking adds to this...Good luck as believe me it can be done...Take care...

Than you Caroline for your comforting words.

My blood pressure continues to be high at times, its very frequent though, which got me worried. Forced me to get one of the small digital BP measuring devices at home to check it. I just measured it and its 138/89 ~ 140/90. I also experience this pulsating vein feeling like its nudging with every pulse. Sometimes it causes sudden pain (not painful but more like shocking or surprising) like an electric shock. I can see the vein pulsating at the lower midline of my chest (under my heart I think, slightly to the left) I was wondering if you have any idea?

Hi again: Still nothing too worrisome...Your bottom number likes to float higher and smoking as well as Adderall can raise it, so why not discontinue the smoking...Try watching your salt content...Relax...Think positive...If you get too many of the higher/lower number readings, then talk to your doctor....IMO,you can create your own stress level...Take care...

Yea I will definitely be cutting back on smoking. I don't really eat salty or fried foods much but will try to lower my sodium intake whenever possible. I think lack of sleep and stress combined with other external factors like Adderall are the main causes.

I couldn't agree more I took a shower to relax a bit, and measured my BP, dropped to 127/70.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi again: You are very welcome...You now may have found the secret of good readings...One more thing...Don't take it too often...Every couple of days is great, but don't sweat it...You have now shown yourself that your normal low is 127/70....Your other readings could be caused by stress and/or "white coat syndrome" which you (me too) and many people acquire at a doctor's office....

Good luck and take care...
