Q: Hida scan and gallbladder contraction ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 13th, 2009
I have been seeing a G.I specialist for 2 months for nausea/diarrhea/vomiting that had been waking me up EVERY night. This occurred on an off for a year, usually at least 2 days per week. In the last four months, it began happening every night. With prilosec, no more waking, but I still have nausea daily.
Have had a endo and colonoscopy- both fine. Blood work neg for cancer, emptying scan shows normal rate. Ultrasound looked fine. Hida scan did not cause my gallbladder to contract at all. My doctor did not explain to me what this might mean. CT was done friday and I'm waiting to hear back on the results.
I know that fattening foods like chocolate or peanut butter always make me feel nauseous, and I occasionally have cramping and right rib/ back pain with the nausea.
Does this sound like a gallbladder problem? Is it good, bad, or neutral that the cck did not cause my gallbladder to contract? I am so tired and sick of being sick. What should my course of action be?

It is not possible to make specific diagnoses over the Internet. However, based upon your symptoms and the results of your CCK-HIDA scan, you may have a condition known as gallbladder dyskinesia. Patients with this syndrome often experience right upper abdominal pain after eating fatty or greasy foods, and may also experience nausea and vomiting as well.

Since your doctors have ordered a CT scan, I am assuming that they wish to rule-out other causes for your symptoms, as well.

Hopefully, your doctors will discover the cause(s) of your symptoms, and help you to get well again.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
