I am 59 years old and have suffered with a Hiatus Hernia for many years controlled by Omoprazole, 2 years ago I went to see a Consultant to be considered for a Gastric Bypass Operation I was 19st 2 lbs, each time I saw him he assured me everything was ok and I lost 2 sts in 20 months it might seem a small amount to you but it was so hard for me. I had 3 endoscopies which are not pleasant on Feb 2nd this year 209 I was told I couldn't have the Gastric Bypass Operation as my Hiatus Hernia was very large, I was told if I lost 5 sts they would operate on my Hiatus Hernia. I went to my Dr the same day and apparently he had had the letter saying I couldn't have the operation since the November and hadn't thought to let me know. My Hiatus Hernia is very bad I vomit at the moment 5 out of 7 days and not just once I eat Very worriedmy evening meal about 6 to 6.30 and then I get a terrific pain under chest rib cage area and I vomit for about 3 hours until the pain stops. I now take 40gm of Omoprazole which is the highest size, I have no faith in my doctor and am so worried I would have surgery to stop this lifestyle now, I have a disabled son and need toe well what can I do. Last time I saw my Doctor he gave me a lecture about wasting his time and that was after they called me in to say I was anemic he didn't connect the two you can become animic with Hiatus hernia as I believe.

A number of problems can cause the symptoms that you describe. However, one can develop something called a paraesophageal hernia with a large hiatus hernia. Paraesophageal hernias can cause obstruction of the stomach, resulting in frequent nausea and vomiting. Rarely, the stomach can twist within the chest, cutting off the blood supply to the stomach, which can be a life-threatening problem.

Perhaps you can persuade your doctor to refer you to another GI doctor and surgeon....

Sincerely, Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
