Hi,
i'm 21 years old and I have been a smoker for 5 years. I quit about a month ago but every now and then I still slip up. I have acid reflux disease and a hiatal hernia. My acid reflux is really bad and its a constant pain for me.. I also have generalized anxiety disorder... Right now I don't have health insurance so i'm not taking anything for my anxiety or gerd other than OTC prilosec. Tonight im feeling panicky because i couldn't go to sleep.. because i have a sharp chest pain on the right top side of my sternum and lower left side.. this has been happening for a week or so? it comes and goes but when it comes i get really freaked out and my anxiety acts up.. I've been coughing up greenish yellow phlem but only today.. I guess thats cuz i've been quitting.. i've quit before this year about two months ago and went back to smoking but only like 2-6 a day until recently. I feel a little nautious.. but i think thats cuz im panicky.. OH and for the past 3 days my left shoulder has been hurting REALLY REALLY BAD.. i think i slept on it wrong.. but could any of this be connected? I'm worried that the chest pain is serious and i dont know what to do...

Sorry for the late reply.
Has the pain gotten worse or better during that week? Can you describe the pain for me? How is the pain now?

Greenish yellow phlegm means there could be an underlying infection, or more likely, as you suggested, the cessation of smoking.

Has anything you've tried helped prevent the pain?
If it is reflux, you could try sleeping sitting up more in bed.

It is about the same... Today is the first day that it hasn't been bothering me. It was on both sides of my sternum like where the ribs attach and when i pressed on a spot where it hurts it felt less sharp but then my bone felt sore. If I cough it s like a sharp pain at the center of my chest.. sometimes its on the top left side of my chest.. but every time there is a pain in that area and i press it hits bone. I dunno.. Today is much better, last night i took some seroquil i dont know if that has anything to do with it. I'm not thinking about the pain and i havent noticed any pain either. But i still have a pain at the back of my shoulder and neck. I'm assuming thats like a pinched nerve or i slept on it wrong.
