Shingles are caused by Varicella zoster virus (also belongs to the group of Herpes viruses), that isn't the same as herpes 1 which causes mouth sores.
Shingles rash or shingles blisters are contagious and virus can be transmitted by touching them.
However, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else, if they already had been ill with chickenpox (caused by the same virus) in childhood.
