Q: Hernias and pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 11th, 2008
I have had 2 emergency cesearans, and after my 2nd child noticed I had a hernia. I had 3 hernias that were repaired in Feb this year. One paraumbilical, a midline hermia 9cm below the umbilicus, and a left inguinal hernia. The surgeon used my cesearans scars to fix the lower two hernias. I would like to know if i can have anymore children, and if so is it really risky or not. How does the mesh hold up during pregnancy? Will they have to cut through the mesh to do the cesearan? What about scar tissue is cutting through this dangerous? Will I be ok? and what is the worst case sanario. Your advise would be greatly appricated.

If your reproductive organs are okay you can have more children.

The mesh may hold up during the pregnancy but it may need to be cut if your next delivery is with a cesarean again. Certain of your hernias might reoccur.

I don't think that cutting through a scar is dangerous.

You may want to consult an abdominal surgeon and a gynecologist for an expert opinion
