hernia surgery options
Posted: 04-19-08 14:08pm

Hi, i'm a 20 year old male. My doctor said I have a hernia in the groin area, its smaller and there isnt much pain. He said I can wait for surgery and not do it right away, but I like to run and lift weights and when I run I feel some pressure but not much pain.

After hearing about problems with mesh some people have, I have gotten more nervous for the eventual surgery. However, there isn't anything else to do, right? This is the only way to repair it? I have also heard that some people have been fine after their surgery.

Any comments please? Thank you.

Hello
Welcome to ehealth

Sorry to hear you have a hernia. There is another option to repair the hernia it's called the Shouldice Repair. Because your hernia is small it might be worth asking your doctor if he/she can repair it the old fashion way.
Ever since the meshes many people are suffering, while some people do well. It's hard to say how the outcome would be if you have the mesh implanted.
I know how much pain I am, I'm at the end of rope but I'm still fighting for answers.
I wish I knew about these problems prior to my repairs.
Get as much information that you can about the meshes, ask your doctor which mesh he/she would be implanting in you, the risks and complications.

I wish you the best and please pm me if you'd like.

Hi

The end of my rope statement is because I am in so much pain. I don't know what to do. I've had some doctors straight out tell me they do not know what to do for people who are suffering from mesh related pain.

The mesh can be taken out but it leaves a whole new set of problems and questions, such as what will they put in the place of the mesh because overtime scar tissue forms, nerves can become entrapped which is what starts the pain in the beginning along with the mesh crumbling, folding, hardening, infections are also setting in with meshes.People that have had the meshes taken out end up with an open space where the mesh was, some are left with an open wound, some end up with the another mesh and no better than they were in the first place.

Trust me I'm not trying to scare you, I'm being honest I do not want to see anymore people suffer.

There are only a handful of doctors in the country that are specializing in the complication of meshes, other surgeons don't think there's a problem and send patients to pain management because they say "there's nothing we can do for you." That's the line I got."
When you have time look at the sticky, if you need help understanding what is in there please ask me.
Feel free to pm (private message) me also.

Thanks for your suggestion in the sticky. A lot of people have tried this with no success.
I've been in contact with many people, trying desperately to get an answer not just for me but for everyone.
