Hernia after two abdominal surgeries
Posted: 07-04-08 21:22pm

Hi,

My wife had two abdominal surgeries. One in the year 2006 which was a C-Section and the other in January 2008 for posterior fiberoid. Both surgeries were done using same opening. She was normal until two weeks back when she suddenly started having abdominal pain. She was taken to emergency and a CT-Scan was done and we found that its Hernia. She is still in severe pain and I would like to know from friends about their experience on Hernia and do we really need an operation for such conditions.I am not sure whether my wife is ready for a third surgery in her abdomen. Is there anyother thing which can reduce this pain? Please let us know.

Thanks,
Umesh

I'm sorry to hear your wife is going through this.
I would recommend researching hernia meshes, many surgeons repair hernias with meshes today. The polypropylene meshes are the cause of many people suffering.
On the top of this forum you will see a sticky with a topic

The doctor should give her something for her pain.
She can try heat and/or ice and ibuprofen as long as she can take it. Call her doctor for the pain, she shouldn't be suffering.
hernias can strangle the intestines causing a great deal of pain.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for your reply. The problem is no pain killer is having an effect on this Hernia pain. She was taking Hydrocodone 500mg for sometime but it had no effect on her pain. After the emergency, Doc has prescribed her some sleeping pills. I feel pity for her sufferings. Since she had a major operation only in the month of January, I am really not sure whether I should go ahead with another surgery in her abdomen for clearing this Hernia. Please give your suggestions and alternatives.

Umesh

The Hydrocodone must have been acetaminophen 500mg and another dose for the hydrocodone either 5mg, 7.5mg or 10mg.
Does her doctor recommend operating now or waiting? She can always get another opinion. If she is in this much pain she should look into having the operation but ask about the bio-mesh (Surgisis) instead of the other meshes used.

We have an appointment with the general surgeon tomorrow. He will be deciding on whether to have surgery or not after looking into the CT-Scan results. I will discuss about the bio-mesh with him. Thanks for your suggestions. Do you know any other good pain killer which is available over the counter? Please let me know.

Umesh

I would ask the surgeon what he'd reccomend for her.
Good luck and please post with an update.
All the best.
