Inflammation of the liver caused by hepatitis C virus is known as hepatitis C.
HCV is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease (at least 75% of people infected with hepatitis C develop ongoing, long term disease), which can progress to the point at which the liver begins to fail.
Recent transfusions of blood poses zero risk for hepatitis C, but, it isn't excluded possibility (blood and blood product routinely are tested for this virus).
